Havn't been out in a few weeks and so headed out with a mate in his boat yesterday.

We hit the water at about 7, picked up a few livies and headed for 12 mile. On the way we saw some whales to the south and so killed the engines. The swam up past the boat and it was a great site as always. We then continued on and arrived to a flotilla of boats. We sounded around and jigged for about an hour. The fish were not in large schools and were continuously on the move which made locating fish difficut. We jigged up a couple of rats and then headed wider.

We had a search around browns and a bit woder and the water temperature was a cool 17.4 to 17.8. There is some great water very very wide (much out of the range of any trailer boats) which is producing good fish so we decided to give my mate's new electric reel a go.

I tried bottom fishing browns with an alvey reel on a rod. Let me say it was a bad idea. I hooked two decent fish which came off about 3/4 of the way up. I was buggered and blody annoyed!!! I reckon if I had a large reel mounted on the side of the boat it would be better as lifting such weight up with a rod tires you out and i reckon the fish floated off once their swill bladders had bloated as i was not winding fast enough.

Anyways, my mate and i worked as a team with the electric reel, taking turns at boating fish and adjusting the throttle when pulling up fish (bit of a joke really!!!) We got 4 big gemfish, a frostfish and a blue eye cod. We also lost several fish at about 100m due to what we are pretty sure were sharks. I was astonished at the number of fish down there. I could not believe that we hooked up basically as soon as the bait hit the bottom. Unbelievable!!! Perhaps it was just a good day?!

It was a good new experience but I can't say i would go out just to bottom bash browns with electric reels.

The photos are with my mate, but I am looking forward to blue eye for dinner.

Good on ya Andrew - at least you got some good fish for a feed!

I am keen to give Browns a go on the Jig :biggrin2: I know a few blokes have done it before and scored good fish. I like the idea of the physical challenge as well, although i think that might change 300m in to hauling a decent fish off the bottom!! Plus i haven't got a reel with a big enough line capacity at the moment.

well done mate glad to hear u did well out browns was pritty average at the peak & 12mile when we seen u only got 1 rat and a few bonnys. What sort of hooks were u using at browns? when u are pulling up with from the deep it is a idea to use big circles, when there air bladder comes out they tend to float of the hook if u are not using circles, but like u said u could of been sharked that does happen alot, hope 2 c u out again hopefully the fish are on next time

Jim,

I would certainly be keen to give jigging the bottom a crack on the right day. I have 600yds of 50lb on my saltist so it should just be ok. First i would recommend using a bait so you get a feel for what you are in for! I am going to give it another crack manually next time but with as lighter sinker as i possibly can as i think that is what killed me. It's a bloody long way!!!!

mc,

Unlucky on not finding many more fish. It was great to meet you guys, unfortunately the fish were not playing ball. We were using circle hooks at browns. I noticed particularly on the blue eye which we landed, that a large hole had worn into the fish's mouth and if there was a release in pressure it could have come off. I reckon the sinker i was excessive and made my progress too slow, such that whatever i had probably floated off. We were pretty confident we were sharked as the was a violent shake on the line then nothing. When we pulled up the rig the hook leader had been chomped!
