mad_mullet
hey peoples has been a wile as i have had a few minor problems with mullet, all sorted out now and first thing we do is get ready for a day offshore, we gear up and head out of botany saturday 10/7 after some slimeys and yakkas in the tank we head out, was excited to take her out again and we punched out hard and headed south to find a temp we were after, hit the shelf in no time to put out a spread in search of bluefin tuna, spread set we trawled south further after about an hour the long rigger cracks with a huge whipping sound and before i knew it the drag was screaming like a whistle on an air blowwer, the deck was cleared the boys were on edge the fish took off so hard we had to turn and give chase, after about a 100 metre first run it slowly turned and came towards us, the temp was 17.2 se we had high hopes of bluefin and it sounded of large size, it came about 20 metres off the boat then decided it didnt like the look of the mullet turned its head ant dug deep with a good 250metre run with huge power this fish didnt look lke we could stop it, on 24kg the tiagra was humming and we turned to chase again, after an exciting 20 mins or so the line went dead, quick on the wind incase the fish turned we soon figured out the fish was lost, we were spewing, as the line finally came in the lure showed itself and we soon learnt we had straitened the hook, damn it as i throw the gaf down, (lots of swearing went on about now) after this we continued to trawl for a slow day of not another bite, but to cheer me up the boat went awsome and and problems accured, i will see if i can put up a pic of the lure, is hard to see the hook but its bent and twisted, i will also trt post a you tube link of a short video on the fight and a short vid of us punching out,, have a good one every one cheers andy

Aero
Arman knows my lack of love for those hooks. I still have a dozen or so sitting in my glove box for him. Unlucky guys, murphy's law sucks ! Chris
wacko
Pakula also does a heavier gauge "dojo peche" hook. These are quite good and have'nt let me down yet, even running some heavy drag pressure they won't open up. Cheers, Wacko.

james1990
all i use is dojo hooks on my rigs, bloody brilliant hookup if fished on the right gear - but i'll be stuffed if i'd run that rig on 24kg with 8kg of drag and heaps of line drag and water pressure - it's like putting trolley wheels on a F250! for all tuna rigs i use heavy duty dojos as they have softer mouths so penetration is not an issue, all stripe and black marlin rigs (10kg & 15kg) i'll run light dojos to ensure positive hookups; and anything bigger for blues see the heavy duty 35 and 40 hooks come in to play. it's all about fishing the right gear in the right situation. Peter Pakula
James that's way too logical, but thanks anyway!
Makaira
Experience is something you get two seconds after you need it. Dont run that light guage setup on 24kg. That hook set up looks fine for 10kg (or 15kg at a stretch). When running 24kg gear you need (and CAN) run heavier hooks that will set easily with 8kg of drag. The main reason you would run light guage hooks (like the Pakula one shown) is when running light line classes with low drag settings and you have the need to get hook penetration accordingly. Constantly re-rigging your favourite lures is a balancing act across what line classes you run over different seasons (tuna vs marlin) and wind-on vs none. Dont run a one-size-fits-all philosophy with lures and outfits. - Steve
boattart
For some people penetration is everything but sometimes what really matters is durability...
