brettmann86
Hey raiders after getting a call from a mate saying he spotted a couple of sharks swimming close to the ocean boat ramp late yesterday arvo i thought i'd take some time this morning to go have a throw so threw the shark gear in the car and headed out for a looksie.. showed up used an entire mullet for bait on a 2 hook 600lb rig the bait wasn't in the water for more than 40 mins with minimal berley out when the clicker started to hum and well after an energetic fight i brange this little beauty up went a little over 4 foot and was around the 20-30kg range, perfect eating size so she came home with me, forgive me for not being in the photo but there was no one to hold the camera ha ha ha!! was only there for round 2 hours came home prepared the fish then off to work... it may not be the monster i wanted but it's still a no nonsense fish Edited July 23, 2010 by brettmann
zen801
G'day, Nice size shark man and as you said good size to eat. LR is fantastic for sharks. Had some massive hook up and bust offs and landed a couple at around that size. When the salmon are around they arent far behind. Cheers

Cheers Hey there zenman, yeah long reef isn't bad for the sharks, it's not a bad fall back area for some of the other spots i fish. yeah the sharks that size are hard to beat battered and fried, didn't see much surface action from the sambo's but no doubt they were there, i'm hoping to use the ledge at lR to my advantage this summer and try catching me my elusive tiger shark land based... i havn set myself an easy task but i've got my own sydney bucket list of sorts
slam354
Hi there Bretmann.I Would love to catch one of those but I dont have the gear and wouldnt have a clue how to rig up for them. Can you tell me the outfit that is required and will an mt8144 doubled with a heavy duty spinning reel work or is that a waste of time.Perhaps we can have a session together some time. Cheers Steve Hey Steve, surprisingly sharks are not all that hard to target and are actually quite common by-catch when fishing for jewies.. with the gear i use because i generally target sharks alot bigger than the one pictured i have a dedicated rod and reel set that is specifically set up for sharking, some say it's over kill but for me it's very comfortable and handles a dream, i have a 2.1m 24kg game rod paired up with a penn senator 9/0 spooled with 500m of 80lb igfa mono from there i have 6 foot of 200lb shock mono leader leading down to 1.2m of 400lb nylon coated steel trace with either a 9/0, 10/0 or 12/0 J style hook, as i said thats a purpose built shark set up and has handled very large fish 10'2 is the biggest i've landed, my partner actually gets away with a surf rod set up so standard beach gear with a 9000 size reel spooled with 200yds of 50lb mono with a metre of 100lb steel trace and she feels comfortable fishing with that, that sort of set up will see you comfortably handle sharks in the 2-6 foot range, any larger sharks than that should be dealt with on an overhead reel just because of the improved line capacity, of course with a standard beach reel capable of holding 200yds of 50lb mono you can double that with braid but i have found that braid tends to tangle alot easier, as for bait and stuff like that i generally use either whole fish or really large slab baits i.e striped tuna, mullet, salmon, eel, stingray although live baits work just as well but it is a good idea to trim the tail of the livie before sending it out as they struggle more and therefore get the sharks interest alot easier. as for times of day to fish the high or low tide does not really matter as long as there are baitfish in the area, best to concentrate most of your efforts in between sunset and sunrise, as they are more active in the low light periods.. hope what i've said there is a little bit of a help, me and another raider have a wide plan of going to broken bay in late august/ early september i'm sure there would be no problem if you would like to come along and if you would like to tee something up for around september when the weather warms a little i'm more than happy to meet up

hooklineandsinker
nice way to spend a few hours can i ask how much meat is on a shark that size are you sharing it friends does the flesh freeze well also are you letting the bait be your weight ie. no sinker to your bait and let it roll in the waves or is it weighted to the sea floor sorry for picking your brain but if you dont ask you'll never know cheers mick

brettmann86
Um ok few ansers to give here lr is short for long reef, casting a senator 9/0 is an extremely hard thing to do but easy once practised enough just watch the thumb burn!!! And off that size dish you can expect around 10-15kg of meat depending on the species and girth of the fish. Although I would reccomend not attempting to cast a 9/0 as you can damage your reel an easier way is a huge underarm throw or to paddle your own bait out in a canoe or kayak or something similar oh and I generally weight my baits with a pyramid sinker unless I'm floating my baits out Edited July 25, 2010 by brettmann
