steze
After a long wait finally I got to go on my first charter, it was one of the game fishing charters from Hamilton Island. We left the Marina at 8am and traveled for about 45 minutes. I had no idea where we were going but supposedly it was one of their good spots. Words cannot express how rough it was out there. Even for a huge boat it rocked like crazy and being the first time going offshore I have to say I did pretty well, alot of other people on board threw up and weren't feeling very well. Anyway when we finally arrived at the spot, we were geared up with tiagra's and trolled with some hard body halco lures. It wasn't long before I got my first hit. The reel just screamed. I was so excited but at the same time paranoid about falling overboard because the boat was so rocky. Picked up the rod and god the feeling is just amazing. After some hard lifting and retrieve the boat tipped to one side and I quickly grabbed on to one of the side rails and poof! there goes the fish. It was just the start so I wasn't that dissappointed. Within 5 minutes of trolling my rod bends and the reel screams again. This time I'm on for sure!! After a long time of retrieving and lifting, I finally managed to land my first spanish mackeral. I have to say the feeling is amazing, all that hard work had payed of. My arms and forearms were literally dead, all stiffened up and felt like no strength. We trolled for another 10-15 minutes and the rod bends and the reel screams again. This time it felt a bit heavier as the fish went for a massive run. After winding and lifting for a while i decided to just lift the rod up to keep tension and take a 5 second break because my forearms just gave in. Out of nowhere the reel just screams again and the fish is now far from the boat again. I was just thinking to myself " sh*t!! all that work and im back to square one" Not giving up i used whatever i had and eventually I landed it. Another huge spanish mackeral. It was a half day trip and I managed to land 2 and losing about 3-4 due to my inexperience with game reels. I didn't guide the line in properly when i was reeling it in and it kept getting stuck and i had to release some line to wind it in properly and I lost a few because of that. Despite the rough seas I am very happy with my performance, I landed 2 and didnt fall in the water. haha. Pics will be up very soon. http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1227/img1525de.jpg Edited July 24, 2010 by steze

steze
It was ruthless.. The skipper said this is something normal for them.. The bloke that was doing all the gaffing. He is just amazing. In the midst of all the big waves crashing and the boat rocking in every direction. Everyone is holding onto the bars and this bloke is just dancing around the boat rigging up all the rods and changing bait etc.Luckily i took some sea sick tablets before otherwise i think i would of chundered.haha. But hell yes I would recommend it to anyone going to hamilton island. Pm me and i'll give you the details of the charter. If your accomodation has a kitchen then your sweet as. If not theres a fish and chip shop next to the marina which can cook the fish for you for a certain fee. eagle ray
SE trade winds have ruined many of my trips out there. Good mackies though.
