mavo
G'day Raiders, I finally got myself a beach rod and some Salmon rigs, so i'm going to try for some salmon in the next few days. I was thinking about heading down towards Garie Beach or Stanwell way. I was going to get there early and throw some pilchards (and surf poppers) around. Does anyone know where would be a good spot to start or have any other suggestions?? Thanks.
Guest
That rig and spot sounds great and dont forget to get there early. I am not sure what time the gates open at Garie, best to check first. Look for a gutter or deeper water which will look bluer than the green water on a sand bank and the waves dont usually break in the gutter. Salmon dont mind a bit of movement off the beach and a really slow retrieve will get strikes. The surf popper will also attract srikes above the pilchard. Tides do make a difference on the beach and another good beach is WINDANG BEACH right in front of the surf club on the sydney side of the bridge. A rising tide is best getting towards high is perfect as the sun goes down or just starts to pop its head up. Regards Stewy
bharris
Your right on the mark with those beachs but if your going early i would hit stanwell park because the gates at gairie arnt open till 7am but if your getting there later then that go to gairie theres been alot of bigger sambo's and talior being caught off the beach with a few trev's and bream to. Just find a nice deep gutter that has a rip running out to sea at the end of the gutter and u should have some fun.hope that helps mate good luck. Hopefully early next week i can put it to use and post some Salmon pics (Any size would be my new pb) and if i don't post anything it means i'm probably tangled in fishing line lying in the sand somewhere so send help! Thanks again.

wannabefisho
Beach Worms, pippies and pillies are by FAR the best baits for Sambo's- even though I have caught them on the beach using Mullet slabs and slimey strips while fishing for Flatties and Jewies. I used Snelled 6/0's for my slab baits and 3 X 2/0 ganged hooks for whole pillies- but another effective rig for whole pillies is 3 X size 4 biatholders, 2 hooks running and the end one fixed. use light leads and light leaders they sure put on a show on light gear- go too heavy you will still get them but you wont experience the "acrobatics and aerials" they put on when hooked using light line.
