FGK
Hello I am quite new to angling and am currently doing my thing from the rocks rather than a boat or tinny. I have a 10 footer which i am quite comfortable with. I have been fishing for a few months about once a week in the watsons bay area (camp cove rocks) and all i catch is leather jackets. Any tips for where else i should be looking in the vicinity and what type of fish i would try to get... Can I ask, i also read alot of you guys are getting prawns and squids. how do you catch them? where? Sorry about my ignorance. Hopefully soon, i wont ask stupid questions any more Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks FGK
tyrone07
I have no ideas about the rocks in sydney but assume they wouldnt be much different than what we have on the central coast. What sort of fish are you going to be chasing. Just starting one of ther easier fish would be tailor. Get there just before sun up and with a whole pillie unweighted on a set of gangs winding it in slow is a gun method for tailor and salmon. Some times some kings will come for some action as well. Then you have bream and trevally. For these fish a peeled prawn or salted slimey fillet for bait in a wash with a 1/0 and as little weight as possible and you should do alright. Pigs can also be caught in the same wash just berley hard with bread and use bread moulded to your hook. Then if you want to lure cast look for signs such as surface feeding fish or birds as a sign of bait. If not find some structure like a wash or a drop off from the reef and casts youre lures here. Vary the retrievel speeds and depths and you you should go alright. Sorry if i went on if you want more info on blackfish on weed or live baiting send us a p.m. Also to the site just send us a pm if you want any more info on rock fishing.Cheers Tyrone

FGK
Gentlemen I have to say i am overwhelmed by the kindness and support. Thanks to all that helped. I got a new fishing rod for my birthday with a nice shimano reel. The fella from Fish outta water put on a line which i feel is a bit too heavy. i also use a selection of hooks but mostly I am using the mustads which i have been recommended by the same dude. They are the ones catching the leather jackets. For bait I have tried beach worms and prawns and most effective with prawns. I dont have a particular fish in mind as I dont know what fish is out there. any guidance would be appreciated. With the squid, how do i use it as bait? cut it up or live or ?? how do i put it on the hook if so? should i leave the tip of the hook exposed or totally covered with bait? do i use berly if i am on the rox? which should i use am i better off using floats? Thanks FGK
Guest Jocool
FGK Firstly...Welcome aboard! As far as berley goes, it is VERY effective of the rocks. I always use it. It can consist of anything as simple as stale bread. I normally pick up a huge bag of old bread from my local bakery before I head out to the stones. Alternatively you can use chicken pellets, cat food, and a number of other wierd and wonderful items! Both beach worms and prawns would be an effective bait. If you are cutting up the worms or prawns, make sure you throw some in the water as berley! Anothe bait that is a mainstay of rock fishing is the Pilchard. Size of the squid bait depends on the size of your hook, and what fish are targetting. I feel that using a strip of squid would be more productive as it appeal to a wider range of species. If using a squid whole, a hook therough the top of the mantle should be sufficient if they arent too big. Or they can be rigged on 2 ganged hooks if you prefer. Mustad make a great product, but what you have to look as is the TYPE of hook being used. If targetting Leatherjackets, I would recommend a long shank hooks to save you being bitten of. Most fishing round the rocks can be done using and octopus pattern, or a baitholder pattern hook. Have a few in differing styles and sizes to suit the area. By the way, the point of the hook should ALWAYS be exposed. And if using Chem sharpened hooks, replace them each outing at least. They loose their edge very quickly. Use of a float will be dictated by the area you are fishing, and where you want to position the bait as far as water depth goes. If you are fishing along the bottom, and getting snagged constantly, then either use a float, or a lot less lead. Sometimes an un-weighted bait is the way to go! It offers less resistance to a fish mouthing the bait, and will not reach the bottom and get snagged too easily. Good luck with your endevours mate. FGK
Thanks everyone JoCool, its great to meet a fellow phoenician Well its all planned then, next time i go out: 1- Get a squid jig 2- Get heaps of stale bread 3- Buy a float 4- Aim for some squids in Kelp beds 5- Snorkel around for fish locations 6- Throw bread in where fish are 7- Throw prawns, worms and cut up squid where fish are 8- Use any of the above as bait making sure the barb is exposed 9- Depending on type of fish i spot, use relevant hook 10- If i keep getting snagged, use a float or no sinker Should have a higher rate of success this way FGK
