Blackfish - Botany Bay / Georges River

Hi guys

I want to learn the art of catching blackfish in Botany Bay or Georges River area so need some advise!

I work near the northern beaches and sea cabbage from the rocks is very abundant there. (no luck with locating any stringy weed so the cabbage will have to do)

I have read Cooks River breakwall as a good location but I find it too busy with both land-based anglers and passing boat traffic. So can anyone point me to a few quiet locations where I can hone my blackfish skills around the lower Georges or botany bay area?

I have a small 4m boat so locations from Como down to Bare Island would be ideal.

Any tips/advise would be greatly apprenticed.

Cheers

Dhype,

There are numerous spots on the Georges & Woronora Rivers where you could try.

Firstly, you should try & get hold of a good map as the spots are numerous.

Secondly, you will need to locate a source of good weed as cabbage from the rocks is not as effective up river as weed.

A lot of blackfish are caught on cabbage around the pylons of the Captain Cook Bridge and you will need plenty of cabbage mixed with sand to burley them up.

In the Woronora River from the Woronora Bridge to the where it meets the Georges River there are rocky area's along both the Eastern & Western shores which fish well for blackfish. Generally you will need to anchor close to shore.

In the Georges try Black Butt,Soily Bottom,Great Moon Bay, Russel Jones. These are all reconized spots but as I said before you will need a map to locate these area's.

Cheers,

Theres some good spots in the bay itself the container wall is a great spot using cabbage and can be fished on three sides depending on swell and wind best using the boat theres also the reef of the old Kurnell Ferry Wharf, the slipway in Towra Bay produces as well, there the channel under the Bare Island bridge on the run, Ramsgate Baths the Kurnell Groynes if you fish the lower Georges the reef at Caravan Head will hold fish on cabbage early in the year, if you want good string weed have a look in Naarabeen Lake or on the orck ledges at the Gutters wher ethey chase the blackies.

As for spots I could list many for you and don't always fish close in a common mistake a place like Blackbutts you get as amny as 3 boats out and 18 feet deep on the run in Russell Jones is at least two boats from the shore Red Gum in Big Moon bay you get 3 boats out yet at Cranbook you can be only a boat out all spots are tide dependant some fish better on the in others on the out and a few on both, eg Soily fishes best on th in as does Bakers Rock yet Big Moon fishes on the out whilst little Moon is a run in.

See if you can find 1001 top spots an old publication which will give you a starter.

PM me if you want some other weed gathering spots.

I am in NZ on a semi permanent basis but will be back next year so I could show you round then.

Hi guys -

Sorry for the late reply .. been on holidays!

Thanks for all your useful infomation and i will give some of the spots a bash next week. Hopefully i can report back here with a massive catch of blackies. (probably get a donut!)

I think i'll give Botany Bay itself a go first as i launch from Foreshore Road boat ramp. For those who need some cabbage, the ramp pontoon itself has some growing all the time.

Wish me luck!

you can get good string weed from Waverton down at Ball's Head, or ig you are out on the Nth Beaches, then Narrabeen behind the pool always has a tonne of cabbage and weed, just walk behind the pool on the rocks, or walk around the left side to turimetta.

Also you can get awesome string weed by the million at North Head- but you need to negotiate the ladders and chains directly below the lookout there- however let me tell you that platform is the best balckie and drummer spot in Sydney and virtually no-one goes there, worth the stretch.

Hope this helps, or else PM Luderick 59
