Moonshine
Hi everyone, was wondering if the leagl size for Kingies is 65cm how come the local fish monger sells fish that is a lot smaller in size? Thanks Rick
jordan.widz
yes the legal size for kingfish is 65cm but from what i've heard, farmed kingfish can be kept/sold by the companies that farm them and they are killed at a smaller size because the flesh is not as tough as it is when it gets older. michaelchen
Hi everyone, was wondering if the leagl size for Kingies is 65cm how come the local fish monger sells fish that is a lot smaller in size? Thanks Rick I dont think commercial fishing have a "size limit" becaus they have different fishing style! they use the net instead of the bait and hook. if small fish gets in the net, its most likely that they are dead by the time it is sorted in the deck anyhow so might as well sell them. thats my logic anyhow
Day's Fishin
Hi Rick, not just Kingfish, go down to the fish markets and they sell a lot of under size fish. You get caught with them and you get fined? Regards Jeff
dani!o
guys some of those fish might be farmed... farmed fish dont have a limit, the person who owns the stock and choose to sell at any time... aquaculture is a new industry and in fact far inland people dig enormous ponds and stock them with barra etc. i dont know about kingfish but there are definitely offshore pens for tuna
david88
i am strongly against keeping of any undersized fish but i wonder how "i bought it at the fish markets" would go down if you got pulled over with undersized fish by fisheries..? hottyscotty
theres a difference between farmed and wild stocks anyways the flesh in a farmed kingfish is quite white and a wild king has pinkish flesh
kingfishaholic
yeh the other day i saw 30cm kingfish being sold at the fish market and i was like what the hell!!!how can you know if there farmed or not?
smuz
they farm heaps of kingies in sa in pens like tuna. sometimes when the pens had a malfunction(?), the legal limit would drop to 45cm for a few weeks cause thousands would get out and run havoc. kind of makes you wonder about how big they get them before the market.
