james7
My mate Syd, his friend Hannah and myself headed out with high expectations for a great day fishing and to meet a few fellow Raiders at the social. Hannah is the daughter of former Raider Peter Koch who passed away a couple of years ago. Hannah hasn't done much fishing and she had high expectations. Conditions looked good early on as we left the ramp and headed towards Botany Bay. We arrived at the base to be greeted by Stewy and Donna and a great bacon and egg roll, and a cup of coffee. What great service! I also got to meet Raider legend Hodgey. What a top bloke. However, he looked a bit different in real life because he wasn't holding a giant flattie like he usually does in all of his photos. The wind had already started to pick up, but conditions still seemed "okay" as we headed towards the heads. It didn't look very pretty outside but we persisted. Just outside the heads, there were birds working everywhere, so we decided to troll around and see what was harassing the bait fish. Eventually Hannah brought in one small bonito. At least she'd caught a fish. The choppy conditions were not to Hannah's liking and she started to turn a delightful shade of "green". The wind and swell was increasing so we headed back into the bay. Even inside the bay it was uncomfortable on the water. The wind continued to increase, so Syd and I decided to head back to the river to try and find some shelter in sympathy for Hannah. Unfortunately, that meant we had to miss the BBQ lunch, which was a shame because Syd and I were ready for a sausage sandwich or two and to also catch up with a few more Raiders. However, there's nothing worse than being seasick. Anyway, here's Hannah with the only fish for the day, the lonely little bonnie. Hannah did say that she's willing to try again, but when "the waves aren't so big". Actually, I told a lie, we did get one more fish. Here's Syd struggling to hold it because of it's incredible weight! This shot shows how big it was ... and no, it hasn't been photoshopped to make it look bigger! I have no idea what it is ... but could it be a "catch of the month" contender? Finally, a big thankyou everyone involved in organising the social. I'm sure the lunch was great and we were sorry to miss it. Cheers Peter
arpie
Golly Peter, with those conditions, you were gutsy just heading out the heads!! If I'd been on the boat, I would have provided free burley, for sure!! Shame the fish didn't turn up - the birds must have been in the wrong spot!! bart
Hi Peter, I was out and about on the bay on Saturday. The chop was starting to build and I thought Fishraiders may be in for a bit of a roll. Love your pics as usual. Cheers BART.
