Slink
Hi all raiders , I have been fishing with the Lucanis jigs for a while now and I am not having much luck with them . Generally I just drop the jig so that it is sitting around 3 meters off the bottom and stick it in the rod holder.I have the blue looking one and also a white / orange occy jig . I also have the speed jigs and knife style jigs that I have been using to target kings and samsons . They worked well last summer so I am keen to give them a whirl when the water warms up a bit ! Also I have heard storys of guys targeting yellow fin on jigs ? Is this true and if so what jigs are you using? I presume that they would be the same as the ones that I use for kings but I have not heard of jigging for tuna before. Cant wait to get out there soon , looks like this week is going to be windy again though. Cheers All Slink
REEF MAGIC CHARTERS
Hi Slink, We have had great success this season catching yellowfin and albacore on jigs. Yes the same style that you use for kings, the colour doesn't seem to have a great difference but weights generally vary depending upon what depths we mark the fish on the sounder. Cheers Mike
roosterman
We have had great success using jigs for tuna and couple of trips it meant we came home with a feed instead zip like others... Sometimed the fish sit deap and you may not get them into yr trail cubing... One particular trip we pulled 10 - 15kg albies from 200 mtres down and the school rose up with the first couple hooked then stayed in the trail till we got sick of them.. We had a ball that arvo... Mates have got fin to 60kg on jig but im yet to hook one and the fat shorter ones were better instead of knife jigs... I am in 2 minds still with jigging and cubing at same time... Earlier this yr we had kegs in the trail with popper, jigs and cubing.. I got one of 40kg on cube with another lost with gear failure just before mine but i think the jigs etc might of scared them off as they were there but fussy... I had them play with pilly eventually bumping bait off as well just before my only one landed for trip... I am sure others will have theries etc on jigs etc and its no longer a " are you kidding" response when ya mention jigging browns to someone.. Hope this helps... Cheers... Steve.... fryboy
I thought you were supposed to drop the jig to the bottom and retrieve it very slowly, then repeat....? Didnt know you could just leave it near the bottom...
whi7eindustries
Jigging is a an awesome way to catch Tuna, they've been doing it in Indo for years, especially for Dogtooth, there's heaps of clips on Youtube. We always drop jigs at a few spots on the way out to Browns/ Canyons etc etc, basically the bigger the jig you use the bigger the fish that hits it. Use long knife jigs in shallower water and the heavier shorter jigs out deeper otherwise your jig will catch the current too much and have a huge belly in the line, not what you want for jigging. I just got a new Hots One Pitch Slider and I'm frothing to get out amongst them. Goodluck with the Lucanis, apparently the green and gold is the one producing the goods (Kings/Snapper). Cheers, Tobe
kajiki008
Hey Slink, The jigs for the tuna need not be overly heavy as you will find the heavier jigs do not impart the kind of action that the tuna likes. Lost on ( you can ask Mike ) on a 200gm jig dropped about only 100 metres down ( where the tuna was sitting not for anyting but because of my own stupidity of using light line and not understanding how it works. If the tuna does take your jig, let it run and dont panic. I did and tried to stop the reel from being spooled after losing about 200 metres of line so i thumbed it too hard and it snapped ! It will be dependent on the size of the fish of course but generally from what i heard of reports in the states where they predominantly do this for BFT, better to let it run and do its tuna circles before you apply pressure. It is good if the boat is not drifting too fast and you divide the work around with one cubing and two people on cubes and another jigging by dropping the jigs to around 200 metres and bringing it up quickly. You would have buckleys chance to get it to the bottom only because the depth could be over 1000 metres. Mike from Reef Magic Charters got it pretty down pat and if you get a chance, go out with him with a crew. At least if there is no fish, its a hell of a boat (so comfortable you can be lazy !! LOL) Also the jigs as mentioned are normnally short butterfly types and this was what i used and got the fish. I will be trying again this season and also next season for BFT if i have a chance. LUCANUS JIGS Used them but only on inner reefs where they work very well on all sorts of fish (mostly bottom dwellers). problem is that the hooks on these are not for tuna (trust me) and i have lost kingies as well but caught lots of rock cods, sargent bakers even small snappers on them. You dont do much with them - just drop let it sink enough not to hook at the bottom and let the drift do your jigging for you. Once in a while lift your rod SLOWLY and not too fast and the take is sometimes hard but usually a gentle bite until the fish feels the hook and starts to fight. Very very different than jigging high speed jigs. I tried this at the peak and also 12 mile - Bloody hopeless except that the leatherjackets will eat up all your plastic and you have buy new ones. VIBES Get yourself some vibes - there are some 20+gm ones availabl. Change the hooks into the twin hook ones and if there are bonnies around, you will have hell of time with them cos they also catch you plenty. I have bought some 40+ and 50+ ones to try for kingies so will update with a report if it works.

Slink
OOPS yeah sorry boys , on a second glance at my post i added an extra 1 , they were all around 93 cm NOT 193 cm , my mistake . Anyway we had a good time so we decided to go back last sunday to try again and they had all moved on ! There was no one else out there so we thought that we might be in for a killer session but after sounding around looking for bait , which we could not locate we drifted various times with livies and jigging when we thought we saw signs of life below but to no avail . Oh well thats fishin . Sorry for the tall tail guys
