Fishing Around Oberon

Howdy everyone, i was thinking of heading to the Oberon area with the family for some fishing in the next couple weeks and i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the best spots for trout / any other fish in the area? I used to fish oberon dam with my dad as a kid with limited results, I've got spin gear and plan on using HB's and SP's, if anyone could suggest a couple good HB/SP's aswell that would be fantastic! Ah i should note that i've got a few Tassie Devils stored away in the tacklebox! I've read about fish river and TCD but not sure on specifics, I don't mind travelling around the area or fishing rivers/creeks if these are better locations :D

Thanks in advance!!

I had a couple of days up at the long weekend and the streams are up and there seamed to be a lot of fish in these streams.

We fish on a private farm with access to some great waterways but any stream around there has trout.

Park on the side of the road and its nice just to walk the creeks but always walk up stream.

Just a heads up, by law if you want to fish the streams and creeks that run through private property you will be trespassing unless either you keep you feet in the creek bed or get permission from the land owner. Because of the rain lately up that way that means you need to have your feet wet all the time if you plan to fish streams going through private property without specific permission from the land owner. Once you step onto the bank out of the stream bed then you are trespassing.

Best to be safe and either stick to public land or contact the owner of the property prior to fishing.

Cheers.

Try the Fish River at Tarana.

As you're going along the highway take the 2nd exit you see to Tarana.

Great pub with a few cabins. As you keep driving towards Oberon you will go over some bridges that cross the Fish River.

Just past the 2nd bridge is what used to be a free camping area. I don't know if it is now.

You can also access the river by about a 300mtr walk down from the pub.

I fished this river for 25 yrs & it didn't change. As I said I don't know it now as I haven't been there for 7 years.

It's not easy fishing but the walk is worth it.

I never had a problem with the land owners if you don't camp on their property & explain that you practice catch & release if they confront you.

Going with your family or a mate is much better than turning up with a group of the boy's.

Good luck, show respect & enjoy.

Cheers,

Grant.

Victor,

Mate I live in the area and if you do what JEWHUNTER says and keep coming past Tarana but don't turn left and go to Oberon keep coming towards O'Connell and when you get close you will see where the fish river starts to follow the road, not far after it gets close to the road there is a camping spot called flat rock, it is free to camp there and gives you access to alot of the river although, it is popular. If there is too many people there keep coming right into O'Connell and turn right onto the main Highway to head towards Bathurst, after the little town there is another camping area that has toilets and a playground for the kids. Mate PM me if you need more directions and I will give you my mobile number, I would organise too meet you and show where to go but I gotta work.

Regards,

Norto.

Victor!!

Make sure you have some smallish celtas in red and another colour or two. They are about the best for streams and rivers in my opinion. If you can, the CD3 rapalas in a brown and rainbow trout pattern are good too but it's a bit of a blow if you lose them being so expensive. Tassie devils are a bit loud and heavy for the rivers I find, but if it's a big river then they might be ok. Not sure what soft plastics would be like in the creeks but I'd be interested to know, they could be gold! If you give them a go try a natural coloured flick bait of some sort, probably gulp is best, and go as light as possible on the jighead varying the retrieve to see what works. Can't say if they'll work though because I've never tried it...

Good luck, and remember to keep an eye out for snakes if it's a warm day. We're starting to get towards the time they'll be getting active again.
