Pumicestone Passage 8/5

Recommended Posts

I headed around to fish the ridge on the runout tide this afternoon hoping for a bream or 2 as the showers had eased off & the wind was slightly south west & conditions were a tad better.

I waded out to the spot & first cast hooked a nice bream of about 32cm & released it. I was thinking this is a nice way to start :biggrin2: The wind was still blowing & had gone back to the south making it pretty choppy & second cast I had another hit & dropped a Bream of about 30cm at my feet. I then let go a long cast down with the wind & got a hard bump then another then hooked up on a great fish. It made a couple long runs with the current & had me thinking it was a small GT. It went hard for a while then I saw it a huge Bream at least 45cm long.

I worked him carefully & the section I hade waded to following him down current was well over knee deep & fast current. I had 2 attempts at picking him up cause it was very choppy then I managed to get hold of him. I didn't have a real good grip as the big bream are hard to grasp with one hand & I dropped him. As he hit the water he dived away with the current between my legs & as he was hooked on the tail treble the belly trebles finished up embedded in my leg a couple inches above the ankle.

I was stuck literally with a treble in past the barbs & a jumbo bream thrashing away  . Because of the sand stirred up by the current I couldn't see the fish or lure properly so there was nothing for it except to wade into shallower water. The small hooks didn't worry me but I wanted that fish bad. After about 25 metres of delicate wading the fish thrashed very hard & straightened the trebles & swam slowly away leaving me still pinned. I said " oh bugger" a few times & waded to a sand bank & did a quick extraction job on the lure with long nose pliers.

I gave it away then as the wind was getting stronger & some heavy rain was headed my way.

It was a pity to lose such a great fish like that especially in such an unusual way. He was a real horse & may have given the magic 50cm mark a fright. Still thats fishing & even though my leg is a bit sore I'm laughing about it now. It would have looked funny to a bystander - wading along with a huge Bream stuck to my leg :1prop:

Thats the way it goes Joe :biggrin2: It was a bugger trying to wade with the fish there :biggrin2: when I kept my leg still it sat still & every time I took a step it thrashed around. It was a bloody monster Bream easily the best I have hooked here. Larger than the 45cm fork Bream i got last year by a good margin.

Still there's always tomorrow :biggrin2:

Yes Ken it was the mighty Ecogear SX-40 again :biggrin2:

It was just one of those things mate I have had dozens of fish kick out of my hand & duck past my legs but this one the only one that stuck. Gotta admire those Owner trebles mate, Nice & sharp I never felt them go in at all. :biggrin2: I felt them come out though :1prop: I'm feeling them even more now

Good read Ken - I must admit to a chuckle when I try and picture it. :bump0ee: At least you got your paws on him.

Right about now, if the leg throbs, is anesthetic time!:beersmile:

:074: Its time for another session now. I'm just about to leave & head around the same spot. Conditions are the usual 15 knots of southerly blowing & its raining as well. Actually the rain is getting harder as I type :depression: Should be a wonderful afternoon :1prop:
