Sputnik
I was lucky enough to have a pass for both days this weekend (including my wife's first Mother's Day - you gotta love my missus!). Had a brilliant time on the water. Why is it you always fish better on your own? Probably because you can spend more time experimenting and really fishing out a spot until you're convinced there's nothing there (or discover you were right and it's packed with Bream!). Saturday saw me trying to stay out of that revolting Southerly - I managed to find a couple of spots on the North side of the river that were protected by a lee shore, and thought I'd better get a bit of practice in for the hardbody challenge, so tried flicking SX40s along the sides of a few boats... Well, there's nothing quite like that flash of silver and the scream of a drag when you get a cast just right and a fish nails the lure, is there? Mind you, there's nothing quite like the words that came out of my mouth when yet another cast went astray, either! I was really struggling with the hardbodies - I even hooked a towel some poor bloke had hanging up on the back of his boat once - 'kin 'ell! I then moved off and hit the areas around Pyrmont. I lucked into a big patch of feeding fish and nailed quite a few - including two in two casts. Finished up there with a total of over a dozen keepers and a good heavy bag (I really should buy some scales, as I have no idea just how heavy). Sunday, I thought I'd try something different, so headed to Hen and Chicken. Started flicking the SX40s again, and picked up a couple of really good fish. Nice start. On the way out of the bay, I couldn't resist having a flick at a couple of boats, and found one that must have held just about every fish in the Bay - two in two casts again, plus a connection to a very, very big something that just wouldn't play ball, and kept plugging away deep - all on my softest, noodliest rod! It all ended in tears when the hook pulled... A few more fish just to top off the bag from some more boats back towards the Drummoyne ramp, and I ended up a very knackered, but very happy, little camper. Here's a shot of Sunday's bag (there were 5, but one dived back into the livewell for hair and makeup just as I was about to take the shot!). Next time, I'll use the self-timer. Sputnik
Good to see you made the most of it and nailed a fistfull of bream over the two days. Sunday was an awesome day for fishing and as I drove over the galdesville bridge at 11am I thought you'd be out there somewhere havin' a ball...sounds like I wasn't wrong. 46943[/snapback] Funny, isn't it - Saturday was actually the day when I caught more fish! However, I think Sunday was probably more satisfying for me, as I found some brand new spots that held some really nice Bream. Shame you couldn't take me up on my offer, eh? bmar560
nice breams mate, everyone seems to be catching breams at parra river except for me... and i live 400m away from the river. why is it i find it so difficult to find the breams at parra ? my fishing buddy and I have fished 3 times at parra river and came up with no breams, is it because we went in the arvo ard 2 -5pm ? I managed to get my first bream on lure on a solo trip but that was it, nothing else. What's the best time to get this breams ?? cheers, MB
Sputnik
Mate, I've caught Bream at almost every time of day - from dawn to dusk. It's all a question of finding where the fish are. Now, this may not be the most scientific method of doing that, but, as a fisho I ran into at Hen and Chicken once told me: "think of Bream as being like people - when it's cold, they want to be somewhere warm (the shallower water), when it's sunny and hot they want to be in the shade (under boats, pontoons and wharves), and, just like us, they'll never turn down a good feed (up on the flats when the water's high enough to make nice tasty worms and shellfish accessible). He didn't mention oyster racks, but then there aren't any on the Parra. I've found that advice invaluable. The other secrets to catching Bream on lures are fishing the right lures the right way - what have you been using? And on what kind of tackle/leader? Stick with it, mate - the fish will come. I went through a really tough patch earlier this year, when I couldn't even buy a Bream, but with the help and encouragement of a few fishing mates, it seems to be coming good now (I just know I'm going to head out this weekend and catch bugger all now, but there you go...) We'll have to arrange to have a fish together sometime - you can't be that far away from me (I'm in Drummoyne). I'll drop you a PM.
bmar560
thanks for the valuable advice there Sputnik. Anyways I hit the parra again this morning, I did better today actually much better. I landed my PB bream of 34cm which is my 2nd bream on lure. And 2 flatties as bycatches. I was fishing with Matrix which gave me a lot of infos on how to fish for breams. For my gear, I'm using a 5'10" Live Fibre rod, and a stradic 1000 spooled with 4lb fireline. I think my mistake last time was to use a 10lb Nitlon leader, today I went down to 6lb Vanish. I will write up a report soon and post some pics as well. cheers, MB
