Hi Raiders,

I am very fastidious with my gear and boat and trailer and I was gob smacked today after going to get my trailer wheels changed.

I had noticed a fair bit of wear on one particular wheel which had gone un-noticed for some time.

I decided it was time to get a new set of rubber for the trailer after five years of use with no problems ,not even a puncture.

To my dismay whilst at the tyre shop, when the fellow took the first wheel off that I suspected was a bit iffy it turned out that I was very very wrong and infact the tyre was so badly worn on the inside that all the wire was hanging out and a BIG bulge had developed :1yikes: :1yikes: I was so close to a blow out that it is amazing I didnt have a really bad accident earlier as I regularly tow at 110kph.

The reason for this post is to point out no matter how diligent you are it always pays to check and re-check your gear to make sure it doesnt let you down in the worst possible way.

Regards Swordfisherman

I actually had an incident on Pennant Hills Rd, completely destroyed a tyre (dual axle luckily) strangely enough, on my way to get new tyres! Couldn't have come at a better (or worse?) time. I was liesurely strolling down PHR to Marks and Wallings in Silverwater, heard a bang looked in the side mirror to see blue smoke everywhere. Luckily was able to stop, treat and limp to Silverwater, 4 brand new tyres and a spare later I have done 2000km in a week to QLD and everything is perfect.

I had just purchased the boat so hadn't had much time to get it all up to spec by that stage but rest assured it's a fine tooth comb with everything now.

The boat and trailer is approx 1600kg and I tow up to 120km/h alot could have gone wrong had I been on the freeway at that time!

Not good Swordie, glad it's all sorted now, would've been nothin worse than pickin up poly parts from the road.

I'm about to put new axle on and maybe get some welding done on trailer, but may end up just buying new trailer instead haha.

It's a good warning to everyone, Swordie. I work in a tyre shop myself and I see it a fair bit... most people don't even realise it too. I strongly recommend to everyone that when u check your tyres, stick your head under and check the WHOLE tyre, not just the bit you can see from the roadside.

Great post as ive got my 2cents to add to this topic also.

Took the boat to the hawkesbury for the nye break and on the way home on sunday (2/1/11 6pm)drivin on lane cove rd the car next to me beeps his horn to get my attenion to let me know ive got a flat tyre on my trailer :1yikes: . I pulled over asap to find my side walls completely blown out :1badmood: . Had the boat/trailer brand new since 2004 with good tread still on it but however did notice abit of cracking on the sidewalls a few months ago and didnt realise it would let go so fast. Lucky i didnt go JB for the break as im pretty sure it would of blown on the freeway. Thankfully my mate (dangas) came to the rescue and brought me a tyre to get me home or it would of been very expensive tow home considering it was on sunday and a public holiday!!1  Fitted some light truck tyres for $70 each and problem fixed for hopefully another 5ish yrs.

so yeah check or your best bet is to CHANGE ur tyres but it goes POP at 110kph!

Came back from Forster with the boat last week,up and down to Sid-a-nee with work this week.I would think I have seen a dozen boats or trailers parked up at the side of the road with blown tyres or collapsed wheel bearings.Fellas,it dont cost as much to fix before you go as a tow truck costs later,or worse, come back with the parts to find the boats gone.Happy holidays.Stu.

Rember this...If in dought-chuck em out.

Stewy,

its amazing what can go wrong with trailers, I have a mate who's towed his boat down to Thredbo and his alloy rim exploded just as he was backing down the ramp, no reason it just went.

I towed my boat down to Ulladulla and while we were having a BBQ that night I noticed a bubble coming of the valve hole it took a few minutes but about 1/3rd of the inner tube was poking out of the valve hole it just went bang.

Now I only run tubeless tyres.

The main thing in your case is no one was hurt and we can all learn from your experiance.

Hi all,

I enquired about some tyres a few years back and the guy at the shop told me that I couldn't use normal truck/car type tyres because they are steel belted and will corrode when exposed to salt water.

Has anyone heard of this before?
