Hello all,

firstly, i'd like to say hi to everyone and give the great feedback i see on this forum, i always look at it but only now did i decide to join.

i'm a young guy who loves fishing but never really been somewhere with big fishies.

i have all the gear and all, my friend showed me what to buy and i bought 3 different rods, got my tackle box.

what i need to know is the following:

* how much should my line hold?

* what bait should i be using?

* the main question, where should i fish?

Thanks all

Welcome mate

1 - What reels do you have ? & what are you after

2 - What fish are you after and where ?

3 - How far are you willing to travel & once again, what do you want to catch ?

Thanks mate.

Well here's the thing.

What i would like to catch would be ...

Sorry i'll answer in order.

1. I have a Jarvis Walker reel which can hold up to 20 kg's and 2 that hold 12 - 15 kgs

2. i'll like to catch salmon, kings, jews, nice snappers, etc. i'm not really fussed but i would like to go for one of them.

3. I live in Parramatta and can travel up to 2 hours away. i was trying port botany but no luck, kept getting snagged.

thanks again cut_loose

That's some mighty big reels you have there. I assume you are rock fishing since you mentioned getting snags.

Need to know the length of your rod.....on the blank near the grips should be some information regarding this. It should tell you the length and the line capacity. The reel you are using, over-head or egg beater and number aka 4500, 6000, etc

As for your target fish.

Salmons and Kings are mostly top feeders so you should be rigging up with a float to keep your bait close to the surface, which will also prevent your snags.

Snappers will occasionally come up to get a feed but bottom bashing is better for those, rig your sinker below your hook so you don't snag as much. I usually catch my snappers from the rocks on Yakka flies :D

Jews......heh the holy grail, these bad boys are caught with patience and more patience...unless you are a lucky SOB.

My advice, get a hook tying book that shows you the basic rigs and you work from there. The best way to succeed at fishing is to know your rig, know your fish, and practice :)

Trung,

Thanks for the advise, my rod is a 12 foot with a reel of 20kg, 8 foot and 7 foot with a reel of 12 - 15 kg's.

12 foot is gear ratio is 4.1:1, 15 LB and 320 Yrds

7 & 8 foot are - gear ratio is 5.2:1, capacity is 10 LB and 257 Yrds and all i see is VTR3650. Hope that helps.

Thanks
