snappyemmy Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 (edited) Hi All, Headed out to Newport again yesterday for the 3rd saturday in a row, hoping to do better than last week and find the kings ( no kings last week). We had a 10 yr old kid on board and after filling up our live bait tank with yakkas he was ready to try catch his first king. We got to Newport, good swell just a little bit of a wind around & some good soundings coming from the sounder so we decided to drift. Live yakkas go out and surprise surprise guess whos rod goes off first, yep the youngest one on board, landed at 62cm king, his first ever! Took some photos and back in the water to fight another day, out goes another yakka and yep you guessed it, his rod goes off again.. Five of us on board and only he is getting into the action. Kept doing the same drift and finally I get a good hit and bring up a 64cm king, back in the water he goes. We were slowly running out of yakkas as we all kept pullin in rats. After a few hours the kids rod goes off, this time its a good fish and the rod had to be handed over to land it as it was a little too much for him. After a joint effort a 78cm king is on board!! High fives all round. Got a little jealous as I had been out all these weeks trying but at the same time happy that someone had got a good fish. Down to one of the last live yakkas and the poor little guy kept getting attacked but no hook ups. I had a small led on the live bait rig so even though he was now a dead bait I put it down again and my rod went off, tighten the drag a little and let him run and after a good fight I bring up another quality king, 78cm aswell. Very happy as this is my PB and only the 2nd legal king ever. So to sum it up, great day out on the water, very very hot and a lesson learnt, we ran out of cold drinks ( had to use of 15L spring water on board the boat). Normally we take more than enough and always bring some back home, but with the very hot weather yesterday we were all out, luckly company on board had some spare. So from now on, hot or not there will be plenty of water and soft drinks on board. 2 good leagal kings and a bonnie to take home, everyone happy and some good eating and drinking to come. Cant wait till next weekend again to get out there. Thanks Em Edited February 6, 2011 by snappyemmy
The Poacher Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Great story, and well done. The more you go, the "luckier" you will get. Don't worry, things change in a week and sooner or later you will hit a patch of good fish with no rats among them. See you on the water The Poacher.
Penguin Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Congrats on your new pb King, I presume the 78cm King the kid hooked would be his pb also Its very frustrating to be only catching undersize rats over and over again, good to see you got a couple of legals. cheers
