Im looking at replacing it with a brand new girl but weight is an issue so just trying to match up new one with the old one. Im guessing 80kg but thats only guessing while lifting it off the back. Hoping that someone can put me bang on the money.. Also while im here what is your prefered choice Yamaha vs Mercury 2 stroke range? Etec would be nice but weight and price are issues. a boat Posted February 16, 2011 Share Posted February 16, 2011 Hi, your old girl will be very similar weight to the basic carby engines that some brand still sell today, like Merc and Yamaha. That is they are all around the 50-55Kg mark. Yes a clean tech engine is heavier but the brand we like uses alot heavier duty components like gearcase and mid-section so that explains that, while other brands have a heavy powerhead and therefore need to use light weight gearcase etc. I have some great deals on 2010 model new 30HP E-TEC with electric start that are not that much dearer than a old tech carby engine, but performance, fuel economy, quietness,user freindly features,cost of owning, resale and more make them a much much better engine than a carby outboard. Also with a $250 cash back they will pay for the themselves in a few years. PM me if you are interested because stock is limited. Cheers, Huey. galvin Posted February 17, 2011 Author Share Posted February 17, 2011 Thanks Huey, Im looking at a 40hp and with the etecs i think at 100 plus kilos its just too heavy which is fustrating because i would love to go that way, so i think i will settle for one of the 3 cylinder 2 strokes as i heard they are a little smoother than there 2 cylinder friends. a boat Posted February 17, 2011 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Hi Livebait, yes if you are thinking of a 40HP then yes the E-TEC 40HP being the same as the 60HP makes it the strongest in its class, by a long margin, but they are on the heavy side compared to a carby engien, but as I mentioned the fact that the components are heavy duty is the reason. The prop the 40HP runs is the same prop that the 130HP uses. Yes the Merc and Yammaha 40HP 3 Cylinders are nice running engine for old tech engines and they will weigh a bit more than your old girl, but performance will be better. Cheers, Huey. Fester Posted February 18, 2011 Share Posted February 18, 2011 Hi, the 30 Etech would be a massive upgrade performance wise compared to your old girl, maybe it weighs less than the 40? a boat Posted February 20, 2011 Share Posted February 20, 2011 Hi, the 30HP E-TEC is the strongest 30HP made, clean or dirty tech, and it will outperform your old girl, but as for staright out performance the 3 cylidner carby engines for the likes of Merc and Yamaha will go a bit better, but everything else from fuel, noise, service costs, resale and just pure niceness is in the E-TEC favour.
