how to find holes and channels in rivers

Hi i want to know if its possible to find holes or channels in rivers without seeing the bottom when your landbased

If you go to maps world or a boating shop you can buy a mariners atlas where all the water depths are shown. My one gives the low tide depth and is charted by the navy. They retail for about 60 bucks from memory.
