jay83091 Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Hi experts, I was fishing from the rocks yesterday and hooked up something quite heavy and strong out of no where. It felt like a kingfish as it dived down straight away and cut my braid line against the reef. How do I fight kingfish in the beginning? This is my 3rd time loosing a good hook up in the same way. I couldn't even pull it or fight it because it was pulling down so hard. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am using 50lb braid + 40lb leader Cheers Jamesy
Guest Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Kingies from the stones are worthy adversaries and you dont get a lot of the bigger specimens out. Try upgrading your leader to 100lb and just lock up the drag and hold on. STOP EM OR POP EM Cheers Stewy
BigKing Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Yes 100 lb leader and very long say 6m - 10m depending on from where u r fishing. Good luck
Maiders Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 And maybe change the braid to mono - braid has near zero tolerance when it comes to abrasion.
Little Hooker Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I got smoked on friday downrigger a squid 1mtr from the bottom of structure... 60lb with 100lb leader lasted about 5 sec b4 my leader when pop... you win some you lose some. Im jus goin to lock up my drag next time so i dont give them a head start.
General Zod Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 How much drag does ur reel have? Lure or bait?
jay83091 Posted February 20, 2011 Author Posted February 20, 2011 I have considerable drag on my reel and it still managed to pull line off it. (Saltist 4500) I use lure most of times
