Hi Everyone

Ive been in the market for a Quintrex in the 4.55 to 4.75 range for a while now and i have just came across a 1994 Bermuda Islander for a good price. I have heard that these boats were once made by Quintrex and to a high standard and at some stage they were then manufatured by a differant company and developed hull weakness issues etc.

Does anyone have much knowledge on these boats...??

Thanks in advance.. oh also how many posts until i can view the classifieds??

Hi, that age boat will have nothing to do with that recall. For a short history of Bermuda here goes, we used to sell them when Telwater made them and for a short time as Allycraft built boats.

They were owned by Mercury and made by Telwater (Stacer / Quintrex and Savage owners now). They made a fine boat and we sold alot of them. Then Telwater bought Stacer from OMC and Mercury did not like that so that relationship finished. Then Mercury got Allycraft (no longer in business) to make Bermuda boats for them and we only sold Allycraft built ones for about 6 monhts due to being inferior. That went on for a few years then when Mercury bought Savage, from the Savage family, Bermuda boats for a while were made by Savage in Melbourne. Then Mercury sold Savage to Telwater and Bermuda ceased to exisit and we are at today basically. Also to just confuse you a little more some small Bermuda tropical boats were made, for a few years, by Horizon.

I hope I have not confused you but if the boats is structurally OK that age Bermuda are good boats and if YOU like the boat and think the price is fair buy it.

Cheers,

Huey.

Hi Leo, yes in my opinion the Allycraft built Bermuda boats were and are inferior to the Telwater and latter Savage built Bermuda boats. They used the same pressing on the bottom of the hull as the sides and that should not happen. Have a look at the good brands, they use a different pressing on the sides to the bottom and if in fact you look closly at the hull bottom pressing on say a Stacer they are shaped like the planing strakes of a glass boat and that aids lift, helps in the ride and grip in the corner-that is one of many reasons why I choose to sell the brands I do. I have pretty much water tested all the main brands of boats and outboards and I like the brands of both alloy and glass I choose to buy, because really I "buy" about 100 boats a year so if I did not think they were the best in their class I would be silly to continue to buy them. Have a look on your Allycraft and you will see the clinker pattern is on the sides, like pretty much all pressed boats, but on a Allycraft built Bermuda and their own brand that pressing was also used on the bottom.

I never said Allycraft are no good, I just said they were inferior in my opinion and why back many many years ago when Bermuda changed builders we got a few Allycraft built ones and I ran them and I was not impressed and there were other issues, which I would not go into on a public forum and really are history now that they no longer exisit, both the builder in question and the Bermuda brand. All that said mate, if you like your boat and it brings you and your family enjoyment that is great and the main thing that all boats should bring their owners.

Cheers,

Huey.

Anyway it was a bit older than what i was looking for but it had prettywell the same features as later models ive checked out, So i have bought it at a very good price and ill spend a few $$ and it will be a perfect boat for me. :1fishing1:

hey anyone know any good canopy makers in Sydney ?? I did get a price from a company that offers a mobile service to my house and will make and instal it then and there. They will make one with all the aluminium tubing and canvas with a zipped opening at the front to stand and drive or reach the anchor for $550. Does that sound a fair price ?

Yes that pice sounds alright, see if he can throw in a set of side clears also.

Hi, your new second hand Bermuda is one built by Telwater. Yes that is a good price but good luck with the clears-I doubt they will "throw" them in considering when made with good material you are looking at about $750 for front and side clears. Yes Bermuda fibreglass boats also have had a few builders in their history and some were better than others.

Cheers,

Huey.
