Cost of changing rod tips (or all guides) to roller

Hi, I've bought some medium game combos (one with a TLD 25 and the other TLD 20)and they came with shimano aquatip rods. I'm not too sure on how good these rods are to begin with but the reel and rod combo was actually cheaper than buying the reel by itself (go figure). Anyway, one aquatip has a roller tip and then normal guides, the other has normal guides the whole way. I would like to, if possible, change the standard guides to rollers or at least the tip of one to a roller (assuming the rods are worth doing this to in the first place - please let me know if they're not.

If anyone has done this themselves any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Greg

Hey Greg

I have the same combo, TLD25 & Aqua tip "roller tip" rod. Ive been getting numerous striped tuna on it & so far 1 small yft with out any problems but I dont think it needs full rollers. That is only my personal opinion. Im not a big fan of Shimano although I am considering buying another TLD25 combo as I want 1 more trolling combo and my favorite (okuma T30) is no longer available.

could you send me a message where and how much was your TLD25 combo?

Cheers.

Yeah I know they aren't the best but since I wanted the reel, the rods were essentially free and wondered if I could improve them. The only thing is I'm not sure what the core is like.

Changing the tip to a roller is easy peasey.

Just need to gently heat the tip with a lighter. After the glue softens up the tip should just slide off. While the glue is soft I use a rag to clean up the end of the rod itself.

Go to your local tackle shop and get them to size a roller tip for you. It should have a little bit of movement so that the 24 hour epoxy isn't all pushed off the rod when you glue it on.

Depending on the blank I sometimes lightly sand the blank where the tip goes to give it something to key into.

Be careful to make sure the roller tip is aligned with the other guides.

Be careful not to heat the tip too much because you can burn the blank and the fibres used in the blank can separate.

I then bind on some decorative thread to match the other bindings and coat it with some rod building clear.

Should only take 15 minutes to take it off, replace it, bind on the thread and put the clear on.

As I say easy peasey.
