fook Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Went fishing early as usual , hit the french forest ramp and there were 3 police car, thought there was a big fight or something. they were just questioning some ppl there. then we lauch and started fishing for some yakkas at the ramp. there were a few ppl fishing and i saw a guy trying to put a undersize fish under the ramp bridge in a small bucket... bloody idiot doing illegal stuff again.... people just never learn!!!!! was pretty piss and left the ramp . we drove to quarantine point and to my surprice the marker was gone.. anchor down and 1 with yakka and the other a dead squid strips.... waited for 45 min as it was incoming tide early... there was something around busting every now and then but no bite... went back to balmoral and saw bonitos and salmon , caught a few boni and salmon then they went quiet.... went to try all marker for big fat 0. went to try goat island and saw massieve school busting up.... cast my trustee halco in and bang a kingies... unfortunately undersize ,,,, have to put it back. Suddenly the place went alive with fish busting always everwhere.... for a sec i donnno where to cast.... and they were attacking bait fish in shoreline water and u can see the black bait ball been attack and fish flying everywhere , what a sight. then the wind pick up and fish went quiet again.... Drove all the way back to balmoral area, infront of the heads i think . A massieve boil up ... and cast and we all got some huge not so picky sambo... it went quiet again but this time i know they are around and we started trolling my halco and bang was on ... we had around 6 fish and there was once i hook on the fish and half way i lost it but to my surprice something grab it again and after a few minute of finesse fight, it was back and its a beautiful Samson fish. All up a good day and lots of fun. Too bad ... no legal kingies yet.. need to try harder.

Pretty sure the fish feeding on these baitfish are Striped Tuna. They are moving super fast. I couldn't hook up on them either.

gretsch Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 That is an Amberjack , not a Samson Fish. Samson's have a mottled pattern and a squareish forehead when juvennile. There are heaps of Amberjacks around at the moment. They fight like a King and taste great too. Amberjack Juvennile Samson Fish
