Big Berg Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Hi fellow raiders, I am hoping to fish off the breakwall at Windang Beach (Lake Illawarra) near Windang Island. Has anyone fished there receantly? If so can you please give me details on what bait, time and rig you were using. I usually use pillies on gang hooks under a float. Also does anyone know if there are Jewies there. thanks
Keegz Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Hey , what species you targetting ? If your going for tailor salmon and jews go off the end of the breakwall nearest to the ocean and use pilly like you already suggested If nothings happening go across the other opposite side of the wall onto the little beach , get some worms , crap load of whiting to be caught ( flatties also ) Or you can walk to flats flicking plastics and shouldnt fail to get some flatties Lot of land based options Good luck mate , post a report

I was hoping to target some Salmon, Bonnies and Kingies if there were any. The last time I was there I only caught a Salmon...not sure whether Bonnies and Kingies swim the area Would you suggest a float if I were targeting Jewies? If so how long do you usually let it drop?
Keegz Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I know theres currently alot of salmon and tailor off the wall Sorry mate but cant help you with kings and jews , ive heard off jews being there but havent seen one caught Id think the bonnies are there , there everywhere at the moment ! Good luck

It was right there , good spot Is right at the end of Christy Drive? The wharf near stockpile road?
fullboost Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 you just follow it around to the end pretty much and go off the rocks where you see a few spots you can pull your car into and there is a blue square sign and a bench seat ... thats where i got the jewy last week you cant access the little wharf there as its blocked off with a barbed wire gate
shole01 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Is this right near the boat ramp? I saw a little kingy swimming near the boat ramp a month ago
LungFai Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 The Boat ramp is located over near Jetty 4 (Southern Breakwall) Rat Hole is located over near Jetty 6, head towards the Jetty and follow the road to the left, you'll drive straight towards a parking spot that holds about 4-6 cars, depending on how people park. If you have a ute, reverse park, drop the tray and fish from it . As for the Windang Breakwall, if you ain't there early enough to get a spot (very minimal fishing spots) then there is really no point going
tunastrike Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I walk down there nearly everyday and all i see is undersize fish being kept but fisheries have done a few bust down there and not as many of those people that do that are there now wouldnt waste my time fishing there try a beach or hill 60.

Hey Mate, Where abouts Hill 60 do you fish? Do you fish at the rocks or beach near the school? Gloucester Road or Military Road (near the sewerage plant cheers Edited March 4, 2011 by Big Berg
shole01 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Hill 60 is off the rocks It's down further south of the port kembla breakwalls it's the hill 60 lookout and there's a steep road that goes down to the sewerage plant you'll see heaps of cars parked there usually
LungFai Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Funny that the topic is Windang yet people are steering you to Port Kembla
General Zod Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) I went to windang last Sunday with my son. We went to the break wall (left facing the ocean) and I got only 2 undersize tailor 3rd and 4th cast through them back in and then starting teaching my son to spin more down towards the middle as it was full at the front. I just couldn't believe the people there, all off them were getting under size tailor and keeping them!!! Even my son knows that they were under size and he's 6. He would turn to me and say look dad that man is keeping an under size fish, al I could say is that man well get caught one day. Can't risk it these days if you say anything who knows what can happen and everyone was doing it so so if I said anything they all might throw me in the drink. After half hour with no luck we went to the car put our rods back and drove to the other side to the other break wall (closest to the island) but no rods this time. It was just to have a look and cause I knew it would be the same, and it was, under size tailor and yet again everyone was keeping them. This was about 8.15pm a bit dark so no inspectors would be there which is a shame cause they would off made a fortune and I mean a fortune. Down on the right side to this break wall there's a little beach and I did see one guy get a good size whiting but that's about it. Wanted to say and go over to the island but had the little one with me so couldn't do that, so don't know how that would be , but I reckon it should be ok, just need to get there a bit earlier next time. Btw everyone else was using bait, I used my lure. Cheers Edited March 4, 2011 by General Zod

I have often though about fishing there but am too scared to go coz I am not sure whether the path will be under water in high tide.
tunastrike Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 you can get out to windang island high or low tide but not much point only a salmon or a rat king if your lucky not much else hill 60 is the go.As for the people keeping all those undersize fish of the breakwall they will get caught sooner or later and i dont think they have any idea how to catch a decent fish if they did they would,nt be there.

Thanks for the advise guys. I ended up going to Hill 60 but could only fish for an hour until the Mrs got bored. I got there later than I wanted so I was pretty limited for a spot. I ended up fishing down the hill and slightly towards the left of the car par. I did manage to catch some fish but they were only Salmon. Not a bad session though. I am planning to go there again to chase some Kings but I am not sure on which side of Hill 60 to fish from. I saw a whole bunch of fishos towards the peak of Hill 60 but they didn't seem to be pulling in much fish. Is there a prime spot at Hill 60 that will give me the best chance of landing a decent King. Also would it be best if I use metal lures instead of the whole pillie on a float? thanks heaps guys

I've seen 1m+ kingies caught there before but this was a while back
