eastwood1980 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Hi guys, I will be going to hinchenbrook with some mates of mine on a bareboat. Just wondering i will be targeting barra, GT, and muddies, what should i know about them and what gears do i need? Does anyone have the GPS points? First of all if i am going for barra, which i have never caught in my life..... what do i need to use and which area do they live in? lures only? while trolling? or can i stop the boat and just chuck the lure out. what kinda lure do they go for? or bait? what type of surrounding they live in? mangrove? For muddies what would be the best bait and what time of day? i know that they live in muddy areas. And of course GT's.... same thing have never caught one in my life, what lures or bait do i need to use and location? Oh what kg line would i need? Is there are good website for hinchinbrook for fishing?
LeoB Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 G'day mate how are ya? Should be an awesome trip some beautiful countryside up that way. For muddies you need to get some good crab traps with plenty of rope due to the big tides up that way. If you find any little creeks(easiest to find at or close to low tide) and set the pots at least 10-20m apart as muddies are very teritorial. For bait any fish frames will do but the best bait is golden catfish which you can catch on the bottom anywhere in the channel especially at night. Be very vigalent pulling in traps due to crocs who also live in the little creeks. Keep crabs alive in a tub with mangrove leaves and covered with a wet sack. They are best tied(to stop them fighting) but i warn you its not for the faint hearted. They should be cooked very soon after dispatching and any that throw a claw should be cooked straight away as they don't take long to bleed to death. Now for barra i've had the best luck with live bait(whiting and mullet ) which can once again be caught in the small creeks at low tide with a cast net. If i was you id try and get my hands on one now and start practicing. Its an art i still haven't mastered but do ok. I usually rig them with about an 8-10/0 hook throught the shoulder a minimal weight and try to find an eddy or bank that causes a bit of a change in the current and hold on. The change of tide is by far the best time. Can't really give you much advice on lures as most of the time i've used bait but do know laser pros( in king brown) and gold bombers are productive. Have a try for mangrove jacks as well if you get a chance. With smallish coulourful lures right up in the mangroves. They punch well above their weight. Mate should be an awesome trip and good luck. Cheers Leo
olitay Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 HI mate, there is literally hundreds of miles of water to fish in the Hincinbrook, be careful cause the tides are large and you can get stuck in a creek for hours if you forget your in there, it is a maze of creeks and mouths so be sure you do your research. You will more than likely be heading out from Lucinda, if so, there is a huge sugar loading wharf that is 5Klms long and is a fishing mecca in itself, Spanish Mac, GTS, Fingermark, Cod and Barra have all been caught here. I like to use Gold Bombers for most of my fishing up there (im crap at casting a net) but you will always find a helpfull person willing to cast a net for you. If your up that way visit Taylors Beach, it is South of the Hinchinbrook towards Ingham and is a fantastic fishing destination, the palm Island are very close (by queensland standards) and are a very good place to fish offering many angling options. Oh and always be CROCK aware... there are lots of them up there. Good luck, its a great place to fish and explore.
