Guest Aussie007 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) Thanks mate, was thinking off the boatshed at lilly if i can find the squid. what boat shed at lilli pilli? there is a hole right outside of the net at lilli pilli but its very close to the bath net i cant remember where abouts along the net as i usually cant get that close due to LB fishos u can fish lugano av burraneer bay i think it is the wharf there has jews lurking on the outskirts of where the wharf light shines but some idiots have smashed the light yet again and when the light is smashed there are no yakkas available must have been eatin by the bigger predators as there is a good source of yakkas, squid, pike there Edited March 7, 2011 by gazza
Davemmm Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 There are NO decent jews in the Hacking! Trust me Dave
DTROJAN Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 There are NO decent jews in the Hacking! Trust me Dave yes there are, depending on what you regard as decent. You just need to fish the right spots at the right tide and moon phase. we regularly come across fish from 70-110cm. Not monsters but decent. Usually around the Deer Park area on an outgoing tide. cheers pete.
Guest Aussie007 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 There are NO decent jews in the Hacking! Trust me Dave there was a young guy fishing wallys wharf one time with his father for yakkas and slimies they only had 1 beach rod out most nights i seen them there the first night i met them the young guy had showed us a picture on his mobile of a jew he had caught the night before or a few nights before i cant remember much about it but do remember it was a decent jew but getting a spot there to drop a line out is rare usually families gather there for a fish during the nights

Guest Aussie007 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 i went out to lilli pilli this afternoon the bait fish were getting absolutely hammered in the lilli pilli 8 knot zone just at the end of the wharf on the lowest platform nothing would touch my lures

tumra Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Its bloody fustrating isnt it where you throw every size lure you have and they just dont go for it. The schools of bait fish are tiny so it may be best to go and use the smallest lure you have.

Agreed- I was out for a snorkel the other day and got on top of some yakkas near the weedline to see what happens. There was a school of much smaller baitfish flashing in the water (pillies I think)... silver with a yellow stripe down the body. They were about half the size of an average yakka - maybe 6 or 7 cms. All of a sudden the school started to dart about and I spent the next 10 mins or so watching these guys get herded and hammered by 3 bonito in turn. Was something out of a doco on TV...really cool. The yakkas didn't even flinch.... Moral of the story... smallest lure possible is a great place to start since different types of bait sometimes hang out near each other and only one type may be targeted at any point in time. Good luck!
Mr Squidy Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Hi all, Was wondering if anyone has caught any jewfish on the hacking lately and if you would point me in the right direction oto find one. Hi Jamie, 90% of my fishing time is spent pulling school sized Jew out of the Hacking and through summer there is quite a few around. If your landbased one spot well worth the effort is Gymea Bay Baths. Fish for squid until the light goes out then put them out the back and wait. The main problem at this spot is keeping the fish away from the moorings once hooked, you'll find you'll loose a few but anything up to about 90cm is easy enough to put the breaks on. Wallys warf is another good spot landbased and tends to produce some larger fish at times. Only problem there is dodging the crowds using the ramp. The main problem i find landbased at these spots is all the people that go there and the noise and light they create. Drives me mad when people turn up after midnight whilst i'm fishing and start thumping around and shining their lights in the water out of curiosity. There is no coincidence that all the jew i have ever caught at both locations have been after every one else has left for the night. Keep your lights off and keep quite, in the clear water of the hacking Jew spook very very easily and from my experience, the bigger the fish the more cautious they tend to be. If your fisihng from a boat there are lots of spots around, one great peice of advise is not to overlook the effect moorings have as structure. Many of my most productive spots are at the mouths of the deeper bays just along the outer edge of the moorings. Hope some of that helps. R
