Penguin Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 (edited) Hi everyone I have been doing some shore based squidding in the last few weeks with some success, so now I have 20 squid in my freezer I decided to get out for a fish with 2 mates. We started off downrigging some squid along the coastline off south head. the Kings were around and took a liking to our offerings. Unfortunately for us we got smoked on 15kg gear on 6 occasions by being rubbed off on the bottom, we only managed to land 2 fish 63 & 66cm. I only took 10 squid out with me, and as we had used up 8 so far for not much to show for them, we saved the last 2 for some markers inside the Harbour, also my mate George had also turned green and was about to chunder. Inside the harbour we had one hit that quickly spat the hook. After being fed up at our lack of luck, we decided to anchor up and see if we can at least catch a feed before we have to head home. Clifton gardens was our chosen spot. Green George fell asleep so it was up to me and my other mate Peg to catch something. We ended up with a legal Snapper, 5 Bonnies and 9 Bream. The Kingy curse struck us here as well when I lost a good 80-85cm specimen when my landing net broke in Pegs hands I could have cried as I watched the King swim away. We left the Bream school under my boat biting as we had enough for a feed and went home. Heres some pics Some squid Our catch My cheap &&*&*& net destined for the bin Edited March 12, 2011 by penguin
idolz Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I learnt a similar lesson years ago,,,, never buy cheap shite when ur fishing,,, it takes SO much time/ preparation to just actually get out there on the water for starters,,,, to only sit there for 2 or 3 hours and have some gear fail and you lose the best chance you had this year!!! that would really pisz me,,, ...., Im quite capable of losing the fish myself with out the gear failling!!!!!!! Im yet to catch a green eyed monster,,, would love to snag one!! Great catch anyways!!!
Basil D Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Hey Pengiun, nice catch there and bad luck on that kingie at least you got a nice feed. Ive learnt to always bring one rod with heavy gear with me know and I always have a livie or squid on it.
johnboy Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Nice bag of fish there mate bad luck luck with the kings but im sure you will take the right gun with you next time & get even.
Keflapod Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Hey penguin, you got smoked 6 times on 15kg gear? mate you must have found some serious bruisers down there. That sounds like a good reason to buy some ultra heavily expensive tackle. It's for your 'therapy' for being so humiliated by a lesser life form.... You reckon the wife will buy that reason? If so, she buys the reason and you buy the gear... ...but only if they throw in a free net with the gear - one from china..... so IT TOO can break and you'll need ANOTHER new rod'n'reel..... ad infinitum...... well see how far you can go with the idea.... no need to thank me..... Tony

Poseidon Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I'll second George on "SEA LEGS".. Used it in NZ jigging in offshore slop and IMO leaves all other sea sickness pills for dead! JG
Mr.KingSpooled Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Thats an awesome session man. Love the squid you caught. Me and a mate of mine fished the harbour a week ago (landbased). Found a huge school of squid! I think there where about 30 squid in the group we managed to pull out 16 big squid in a matter of 15-20mins. Nothing took them as bait, so we took them home as dinner lol i was never complaining it went down damn good. Cheers, Mr.KingSpooled
