Fishing Lake Macquarie

You'd be thinking of the Remora fish, they look similar to a Cobia.

True enough, but certainly on the South African East coast, cobia were also a frequent co-traveller as said above. In my diving days I regularly saw this, to the extent that if we saw one of the bigguns, we would always dive under them to see if there was a Cobia. (except there they were known as Prodigal Son)

While not a common catch in the lake, or other inshore water, Cobia are a fairly frequently reported species. There have been several reports this season around Pulbah Island and the artificial reefs, and they do frequent the warmer water around the power station outlets.

The readily available "Lake Macquarie Boating and Fishing Map" lists and shows Cobia as a known species for the area.

How they are taken is also sometimes surprising with them falling to small baits targeting bream on very light gear.

Cobia are also known to have been caught in the Brisbane Water sytem around the Woy Woy Bridge and over at Saratoga.

How big was the Cobia you caught on Monday?

cobia swim with manta rays ,they also love to feed on small rays ,when i spin up the north coast i walk the head lands and look for large rays swimming or jumping out of the water ,and fish that area ,they like a big lure down deep and slow ,you get a few in lake as well as brise water ,pulled one 12 kg on a blood worm fishing for whitting 15 years back .
