ishuffle Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Hello Raiders, Been a long time reader so I thought its time to start contributing! Started beach fishing 2 years ago. I must say beach fishing is my favourite type of fishing! Something about it, just soo relaxing even if you don't catch any fish! Went to the local tackle store at the time and was recommended an Okuma X-Factor 13" (544g) with Daiwa Emblem Pro 5500 (747g) (1.3kg setup). Have caught myself countless salmon, tailor & odd monster bream and a few other species. When trying to cast out metal lures, I find myself tired by the 10th cast and would give up on the idea. Tried a few times to target the smaller species but it was such a heavy outfit it wasn't enjoyable and hard to tell if I got a bite. But have been quite happy with this setup. So I decided it was time to get myself a new outfit. Wanted something light to fish bream, whiting & take on the larger fish like salmon & tailor. Also able to cast out metal lures without getting tired. After research, I got myself the following: Rod: Majorcraft ZALTZ ZAT-962M (212g) length (ft) : 9'6" - Lure(g) : 15-42g - Line(lb) : 8-20 - PE.Line : 1.0-2.5 Action: Regular Highly recommend Majorcraft Rods Reel: Daiwa Caldia 3000 (312g) Total weight setup (524g) I had the rod & reel shipped from Japan and was very impressed with the quality of this rod for the price (aprox A$220). It looks hightech and finished very well with fuji bling! The rod was shipped to me before the reel, I couldn't wait for the reel so decided to test the rod first. Took it to Windang beach where I have been fishing alot from lately and used it with my Daiwa Procast 4000 (439g). Was targeting whiting and bream! Lets just say I now have a NEW LOVE for beaching fishing! I fished for 7 hours straight! (why does time fly??) I didn't even feel tired from using this outfit! Not only that, I could feel everything! every little touch, if the fish had dropped the bait or which direction he was trying to go. Just made me want to fish MORE! I would have kept on going only that I had to be back in Sydney to pick up the kids from daycare! Ended the day with 8 whitings 29-33cm, 2 bream 27-31cm & 1 flathead 39cm. I'm now SOLD on using light outfits at the beach! The new reel was delivered this week so I can't wait for the weekend. Even lighter than the procast! 100g might not sound much but it makes a difference! I believe this outfit shouldn't have a problem with Salmon & Tailor! Will try and target them this weekend!(Rod was designed for Japanese Seabass) If anything it should be heaps more fun landing them! I'm not sure about Mullaway though (haven't even landed one of these on my old outfit) Have a nice day! Phil
GregL Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I love that shop..... My credit card hates that shop.... As the email says: "They were worried about whether the item which we send has radioactivity. We are not influenced at all by a nuclear power plant. Please check the location of " LOL
eholdn Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Hi Phil, haven't heard of that brand before however only being a short rod, how will it go do you think casting wise if your going to be chasing possibly tailor / salmon ? A friend can outcast me with his 9ft rod and o/h combo - just don't know how !! Cheers Pete.

A friend can outcast me with his 9ft rod and o/h combo - just don't know how !! Cheers Pete. I can cast a mile with this setup! it all depends on the line and weight I think. I've got 16lb (150m) braid and on a 35gram raider lure, it goes very far! I can almost see the backing. I honestly haven't caught a tailor/salmon off the beach with this setup, might be a little struggle fighting the fish when he is close in with the wave breaking but I've fished the breakwall at windang and had no problems dragging salmon up. so you just want to outcast him? what is your setup?

buzzpollen Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Hi ishuffle, I was thinking of getting a similar Major Craft rod, the Solpara. Would rather the Zaltz but a bit too expensive for me. Just wondering how you find the manufacturers line class and casting weight ratings? Are they pretty much spot on as they claim? I was thinking of getting a light beach rod like yours for whiting, bream, flatties, etc. but also double as an estuary blackfish rod. Would yours be too heavy for estuary blackfish? Thanks.
rockfisherman Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Light gear is definitely the go, not only more comfortable to use, but more fun when fighting fish.

Phil Hi Phil, I found my self in the same situation as your self, struggling after casting a dozen metal slugs with a "Surf" rod. I also went down a similar path to your self, only on a smaller budget: Posted 16 July 2011 - 02:39 PM I think I have found a direction to head in. I ran into the local Shimano rep and got talking about Shimano's shore spin range. He took me for a walk out to his rep wagon to show me what he uses. Out comes a beautiful Starlo classic 9 footer 2 piece rod. Resized to 79% (was 512 x 384) - Click image to enlargePosted Image initially I was tossing up between the rest of the shore spin family; - Catana - SSS Shimano Sonic Series - Jewel All of the above mentioned rods laid in the 6 - 8KG range and are very light in weight. Once I had the Starlo classic in my hands I knew this was the rod I was after. In my eyes the quality of the rod was leaps and bounds over the above mentioned sticks and also the rod had a bit more of a solid weight to it. Appeared to be very similar to a rod I fingered some time ago at one of those stores that sells goods usefull for boating camping and fishing . I think that particular rod was a T curve stick... Oh, and it also has the "Ian Miller" sticker ???? My plan is to match the rod with a Sedona 4000. initally I had my heart set on a Diawa salist 4500H out of the good old US of A. Beast of a reel with massive line retrieval per crank ( Some thing like 1.2M) Factored in the body size of the reel, it's hefty 595gm weight and also would have been looking at about a $220ish investment. Posted Image my thoughts then turned to a tried and tested Stradic, but with the Sedona being half the price and with a 9KG drag, it will do all I need it to. And lets not forget, my name is cheap charlie after all.. Rod $109 Reel $ 79 Should get me into plenty of trouble for $190...
