Kayak Fishing Pittwater

2kgline

Recommended Posts

Went for a quick Kayak fish this morning in Pittwater (Sydney) Bad weather but improved rapidly. I have only just started Kayak fishing this season but find it very productive. Right place at the right time today. Lots of just legal pan sized snapper, good flathead and some bonus flounder and bream. I have noticed I can catch fish in the Kayak in places where we have no luck in a boat. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Its starting to get to cold for this game. Time to break out the wetsuit. Note Light gear as usual 4lb and 6lb and all taken on bait.

PS Not a king to be seen

Nice catch! Would like them flounders! Where do you go to target them? similar to flathead? weed/sand?

I have yet to try kayak fishing, looks fun. Only thing scares me is sharks! have you encountered one before?

Well done - good feed. Yes, kayaks have a stealth factor that boats don't have. You can get to areas that boats can't access & just glide in without any noise.

I bought a cheap pair of polypropelene long sleeved top & tights to wear under my normal fishing gear in winter at aldi last week-they 'wick' away any sweat but still keep you nice & warm. $10 each. Sometimes, you can get TOO hot in the wettie.

Better luck next time with the kingies

thats an excellent catch.

i have been deciding on whether to buy a kayak or a dinghy. if you can catch fish like that, the kayak looks like a better choice.

does it get uncomfortable sitting for long hours? does it get crowded on the kayak with your bait, catch, rods, net etc?

Nice catch!! Would love to get a yak but having forked out over 15k getting my boat all set up in the last year or two its hard to justify.

I will be posting a lot from now on and I am willing to share a few tips and locations. All these fish were caught in the channel between Lovett Bay and Scotland island. As for sharks they don’t eat plastic so they don’t worry me. Having said I am careful not to let blood or the bait wash through the scupper holes in the kayak . I actually have 2 kayaks and next season when I have a bit more experience will offer forum members who want to try it out the opportunity to tag along. You just supply your own gear.

In answer to your questions yes it gets uncomfortable the first few times out or when you haven’t been for a while but you get used to it and its fine (no longer uncomfortable) . It s not for people with back problems.

I would suggest borrowing or renting a kayak a few times to make sure its right for you. Yes it gets crowded. I will post a picture of my kayak ready for action next week. I take 4 rods, net, gaff, sounder, esky, and also have a live bait well. The real trick is in re-rigging or double hook ups. For the kings we work a buddy system where the second kayak hooks a line to the kayak that has hooked up and pulls it away from any obstacles like mooring ropes. Seem to work OK.

As in my other reply I have 2 kayaks and when I have a bit more experience I will offer forum members who want to try it out the opportunity to tag along the only rule its a an early start and of course must be able to swim.

thanks a lot for that, thats very nice of you. My back is not the best and i get rough when things start to crowd all over me, but i am going to take your advice and hire a kayak for half a day and see how i like it.

How did those snappers fighting on the light gear feel?

Great catch!

Yeah, kayaks have their advantage! I fish Botany Bay and Port Hacking from my kayak. Can't count the number of times I have had a school of surface fish active around my kayak only to have a motored boat come to close and scare them all away. Also, the flathead you can come across in the shallows! But, kayaks are vulnerable and I'd rather be in a tinnie when fishing Botany Bay in the evenings.

Obviously, kayaks are awesome around Port Hacking in the shallows. I was in Port Hacking last Thursday and enjoy it so much because it is so quiet and pretty compared to Botany Bay. Yet, there's still the odd deckhead [interesting new word] who has to burn about in the boat with three quarters of the boat out of the water and this can be in the 4 knot zone!

Anyway, great catch and good to see the interest in kayaking your creating. I got into it as a cheap and easily accessible way into fishing the Bays, but also because of the fitness factor (which should not be ignored in our society).

Cheers

Glenn

This time of year is good for bream in Pittwater and will improve by the end of the month. The trick is you need to be fishing as the sun comes at close to high tide. Its normally all over by 8:30. And I can’t stress enough, light tackle burley, burley, burley and a quite boat by this I mean not bumping around and dropping things that go bang. This is why the kayak is so good its silent. Often we will sit next to boats who catch nothing using heavy gear or plastics. Don’t get me wrong plastics are great but we have never seen plastics out fish bait for bream, and we use both all the time.

Great catch for Pittwater

Is that a regular haul? I have had no luck in there lately.

Wetsuits aren't too good an idea in my experience. I started wearing one last winter on the harbour and just cooked. Beanie, a Rashie or spring suit seem to work for me.

Kayaks are quiet. I've got a boat and a kayak. The kayak works a treat in the shallow waters, around boat moorings etc. And when fish are busting up, you can approach them without spooking them. Kayaks are a great way tog et close to the action. Lack of height hurts the vision though....
