Robofish Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Raiders, my dad has been on holiday over here for the past ten weeks from england and seems to have learnt something new/had an adventure every time we have been out on our weekly fishing sessions . I have already put a couple of posts on describing his exploits in catching kingfish, flatties, a wide variety of pelagics and many more species but this week at the age of 73 dad cast his first soft plastic. I don't think that he really had much confidence in the method when we started around Patonga but it wasn't long before he did his usual trick of swinging a fish towards me to be unhooked every couple of minutes. About 20 mins into the session he cast in his 5inch satay chicken lure and I saw his rod hoop over - I went over to give him some encouragement and tell him to take his time and I called it for a big flathead. After playing the fish quite hard for 20 mins I changed my mind on the call and up came a big shovel-nosed shark! I tried to get it in the net but it was too big and I had to pull it out by the tail. Dad was stoked and after a few photos we put it back and settled into an afternoon of banter with dad offering to 'show me how to fish plastics if I wanted him to'. We had a great afternoon, put together a feed of flatiies and flounder and towards the end I lifted into something that tore off at great speed and bit me through leaving a lot of ragged line - any ideas? We have got one more weekend of fishing before he flies home and I think we will probably fish the hawkesbury again (he really likes it there) and he was really keen for me to post our experiences again, I am sure that he will be on the phone to his mates tonight telling them how once again he is on 'that internet thing'. Happy days.
Fisherman36 Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Nice... Maybe I can take your dad with me next time! I was off patonga this morning, tried flint and steel, juno point and caught zip (well one but not a keeper). Had live yakkas and pilchards and nothing was taking either.
Robofish Posted April 10, 2011 Author Posted April 10, 2011 (edited) We dragged some fresh bonito strip baits along the bottom all the while we were flicking plastics but only caught on the lures. I was pretty amazed to see flatties and flounder slashing at my plastics just as I was about to lift them off the water in a depth of 4m! I had never seen that before.
