Reef Magic 25th & 26th Yellowfin report

Recommended Posts

Well after a long wait the fish have started to show up. We headed out on Saturday with Leo & the boys and headed north in perfect conditions. There were a few reports in the early afternoon coming in of boats having fish up in the trail and it seemed quite a few boats were catching fish. Unfortunately for us we could see fish busting up about a mile from us but couldn’t get them to come up the trail. The boys worked hard all day on the jigs and it’s the first day we haven’t managed an albacore on the jigs. We only managed 1 albacore on the cube and headed for a long run home at 6pm in near perfect conditions.

We left the wharf on Sunday morning again with great conditions. We had a group charter with Luke and his two mates Victor & Corey and we also had Ash & Phil on board.

After looking at the latest charts we were confident that we had worked out the spot where the fish would be today. With the current swirling in a few different directions we finally found the spot we were looking for and started to set a trail.

The drift was perfect and the boys started jigging.. Phil was the first to hook up but managed to pull the hook and later Corey hooked and landed and striped tuna. Everyone was taking turns and as Victor was stripping out a cube the line started to come tight. He was soon onto his first yellowfin and was getting worked over pretty hard when the fish realized it was hooked. After a good 20 minute fight Damo sunk the gaff into a nice 35kg yellowfin and swung him onto the deck.

We then had both the deep live bait and surface live bait under a balloon go off within seconds if each other only to have neither hook find its mark – we thought we must have been sharked but both lines returns with hooks attached.

Corey continued to jig like a man possessed and managed to land a little albacore. Then had to have a rest.....

Then as Luke was stripping out a cube and Damo noticed a good mark 10 metres under the boat and within seconds Luke’s rod started screaming and he almost got pulled in getting the rod out of the gunnel. The fish came up after about 15 minutes and started circling under the boat – this is when it went mad… it didn’t do slow circles but just kept picking up speed in circles and made for a fun gaff shot but we soon had him on board and hive fives all round.

Ash & Phil continued to strip out cubes and eventually we were on again this time Phil was hooked up to another solid fish after another hard fight Phil had him beat and angled him beautifully and Damo sunk the gaff and we had 3 nice fish on the deck.

All in all a great day out with a good bunch of blokes in excellent conditions.

By the look of the charts we could be in for a very good season if they start to stack up as cold water pushes north. The bluefin are thick down off Narooma at the moment and we have a great chance of getting them up here this year.

If your keen for a charter give Damo a call on 0407113349

Cheers

Mike

Nice work fellas. Was tough fishing on Saturday, but still the hardest day fishing is better than the best day working and the perfect conditions well and truly made up for it! Thanks again to Mike and Damo for a great day out

Cheers Leo
