Reef Magic weekend report

Recommended Posts

Well Saturday was a long day for nothing but stripies & fishing was very slow from north to south. Heard 1 boat got 2 fin 60 & 70kg - again big fish.

Today we went a bit wider and raised a big mako only to have him swim away & half hour later the deep bait screamed off taking 600m of line. We ended up chasing him & after 1.45 we got colour in pouring rain & to our surprise a 200+ mako popped his head up, damo gave the boys a look and released him boatside, an awesome effort for a fist time effort & especially on 80lb mono leader with a circle hook. We then jigged up a albie that pulled the scales at 34lb & another 22lb. Had a couple of other hits but pulled hooks on them. Headed for home at 6pm & again had a great ride home. Only heard of 1 fin today at 20kg so it was again slow today. As the moon backs off we should start to see the fishing improve & the current slow down a bit which will help if we can get out as the weather is looking pretty average. Anyway interested to hear any other reports.

Cheers

Mike

Went out yesterday off Batemans Bay, not much about until we reached the 1000fathom line and then good numbers of albies around the 5kg mark trolling dark coloured lures. A few mid size yellowfin were also caught, on the cube and jigging. A nice day out all in all.......

Hi all,

Just been doing some work on the boat and had ch21 on for interest. A boat (not a charter) just called up SE of Browns with a 50kg plus on the deck and larger fish in the trail. Also heard another boat with a 20kg plus fish and they dropped a larger fin under the boat.

Interested to hear reports from some charters on today's fishing.

Cheers,

Rabs

When you jig for albacore - Where do you do it? What depth? Do you see them on the sounder or are you just "blind jigging" whilst cubing? What depth do you drop the jigs to?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I've done lots of trolling, cubing and livebaiting for tuna but never jigging and would like to give it a try next time I'm out wide.

Thanks in advance :biggrin2:

Hi wise one... we jig whenever we are cubing, we have someone jigging all the time as we have caught plenty when there is nothing showing on the sounder, we set the sounder with the fish alarm to scan the top 60 fathoms. We normally drop about 150m down. Jig weights depend on the current but if the fish are high 150g but we usually use 400g. We use Shimano Saragosa 18000 with 80lb braid & ugly sticks - the biggest yellowfin we have caught on a jig this season is 40kg. Its a great way to catch them if they are not taking the cubes or won't come close to the boat.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Mike
