smith Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 With no weed about about in our local haunts after the recent heavy rains Luderick-Angler (Royce) & myself headed down to the rocks to get cabbage hoping this would work in the river where we were going to fish as the blackies usualy only take weed. After burlying heavy with our mixture of sand & scrapped up cabbage we slowly started to get some downs & hook ups. Later on I decided to put a weed fly on to see if the blackies would take it. After a couple of drifts I started to get some half hearted downs but missed the hook up. I then changed my style using the weed fly. Instead of letting the fish take the float right under & giving him time to take the bait as you normaly do using weed, soon as my float went under I was struck & started getting more hook ups. Our session ended with 11 fish. 7 taken on cabbage & 4 on the weed fly. Scrubby
paddy69 Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Nice work Scrubby! A great catch! I was hoping to come down and join you guys....but life got in the way. Hope you enjoyed your feed. Pat
luderick -angler Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Awesome day out Paul thanks for the ride once again mate its always a cracker day with you and how were those pigs busting us up on the blackie gear out Cronulla eh!!! For those who may not know this must be trip number 15 or 16 I've lost count and every trip has resulted in fish our worst outing was a measly two! And it ain't about the fish its the company and the good times and the different spots we fish and the end of trip wash up b*****t session filleting the catch in my backyard and imbibing in a couple of cold Reschs Pilsners! That weed fly what a substitute! Oh and we released another 6 or so! So it was an awesome trip next weekend Pat if we are there! Cheers Royce
leonardgid Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 that is one great catch, how do you cook your black fish?
smith Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 Yeh Royce the pigs did give us a good going over. I never got a chance to break my new rock rod in on a blackie. Once them pigs hit you it was all over. I think both of us lost count on how many times we had to re-rig. It was a good decision to bring the estuary rods along just incase we had no luck off the rocks & we could hit the river. Them beers went down great back at your place & it was a good way to end a top day of fishing. Scrubby
craigske Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 hey all was just wondering were abouts did you guys catch them. ive been blackfish fishing around kurnell lately and havnt got any at all
luderick -angler Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 hey all was just wondering were abouts did you guys catch them. ive been blackfish fishing around kurnell lately and havnt got any at all Mainly been getting them in the bay and up the rivers especially the Georges and Port Hacking. A few in the Harbour. Greeny at Kurnell fired about a month ago but since thenseas were too big and last week there were none off the stones traditionally August is a tough time of year. Try Cooks River Breakwall or Muddy Creek if you can get weed.
arpie Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Well done Scrubby & Royce!! Terrific getting 4 on the weed fly! I always have a few with me on my blackie outings, but usually they are taking cabbage, so still OK! A buddy has made a 'cabbage' weed fly out of green cellophane paper & you would be amazed at how good that fly looks!!! I am hoping he will throw one my way to try up here, cos the lake fish also like cabbage! Check them out!!! Dry cellophane cabbage fly Wet cellophane cabbage fly (right hand side) the other one is a feather one he made I've suggested he chop the tail off, so it looks like a bit of clumpy cabbage & I reckon a blackie will just inhale it!! Well done boys Roberta
smith Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 The weed fly has saved my bacon a few times Roberta. But even using the weed fly you still have to burly to bring the blackies on the bite. I got them from Complete Angler at North Rocks but I don't know if they still have them. I got mine about 2yrs ago now. The ones your friend made using the green cellophane to look like cabbage are great & I can't see why it wouldn't catch fish. If you do get to try them out I'll be curious to find out how they went. Cheers Scrubby
