PRED-ATOR Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 G'day Raiders, Wow what a day yesterday was. It was bank holiday so i had the day off and decided to hit the harbour and offshore with a mate. The plan was to scout a grid about 9.8 NM offshore that i hadnt fished before but heard of some good fishing from there. So we landed at tunks park and headed first to a bait spot, loaded up on yakkas and punched out the heads. First of all let me say wow, what a beautiful day 22 degrees and i have never seen the water so flat. Offshore it was like glass i honestly have seen nepean river more rough than that, it was such a great day to go offshore. Headed to the grid i was looking for and start to drift around, sounding the bottom, until i came upon a massive structure in the water. a wreck maybe? i was in 178 feet of water and this thing almost dead rose 38 feet, sloped off and then a steep dropp. Almost looked like a ship? It was packed full of Surgeon and some very large fish that were not interested in my offerings, im sure they were jewies becuase if they were sharks im pretty sure they would of taken the bait. Marked them up on the GPS and found more schools of fish hanging around some small mounds on the ocean floor but only nibbling at baits. I was really keen to find some new jigging spots so i persued my 'scouting of this area for more reefs'. Found a few fish holding up on another mound in 190ft of water so dropped a 150gm knife jig down and reefed it back up for a doughnut. Then... i look at the sounder and SOMETHING MASSIVE COMES UP, like i have never seen in my life i almost had a heart attack, screaming at my mate to get a bait or jig down, as we reef it back up i hear the distinct sound of a blow hole...IT WAS A BLOODY WHALE! A pod of 4 surfaced right next to my boat, so close i coud have touched them! they peacefully swam off it was a truely beautfil site, they were enormous. My boat is an 18 footer and these things would have owned me lol. Headed back in the harbour with a whole bunch of new GPS marks that i will visit on a night fishing trip, hopefully tonight as tomorrow is my day off YEEEEEWWWWW! As for water quality in the harbour, the place is a toilet. There is crap floating everywhere. I threw a couple of blades under the rubbish for a couple of touches but nothing serious. All the fishing are hiding after BETS!!! We finished the day with a couple of surgeon, reds and trevally, suprisingly no salmon. But i left with a gps full of new marks : ) Was an awesome day cant wait to do it again. By the way anyone go to the boat show? was really good bout a new down rigger : ) Hope you enjoy the read, Predator
Captin Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work, thats my motto. At least you got out there and i know the feeling of being so closely surrounded by whales, money cant buy that experience.
paddy69 Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Awesome Stan, I was down at Bondi yesterday and it made me sick looking at the water and no chance of getting out there. Sounds like you lucked out with that wreck, I am sure will be seeing a lot of pictures of catches from out there. Good luck tomorrow....weather looks picture perfect again!
Dazzlar Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Mate was out there yesterday aswell in my quinnie 4.7 ive never seen it so calm I think the swell inside the harbour was bigger, your right it was like glass out there. We were able to cruise at 40kph up to the wrecks off Narrabeen only took about 20mins or so to get there from the heads it was that flat. The wrecks were a little bit dissapointing managed a heap of undersized snapper with only one keeper, a nice mowie, two nice travelly & a heap of sweep, we didny keep the sweep. On the way back had a go at chasing some tunar i think they were stripes not real sure couldnt get closer enough & when we did they wouldny eat our metals. Then we headed down south off Bondi to have a drift, managed a gernard,a salmon the first ive ever caught on a paternosta rig, a leather jacket heaps of undersized flatties & the best fish of the day was my 55cm Flattie yum yum. On our way home by 2oclock, I dont know where the salmon schools all went maybe the dolphins ate them all as someone posted some footage the other day at Nth Head. WHAT a DAY
