Basil D Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 (edited) Me and Chris(Pongras) Talked about going deep sea fishing and the weather would have no bar of it but today looked ok to fish bait bay and the Hacking area so we decided to check it out and get a feel for the weather and swell and decided we will fish the area and go deep sea when conditions permit, so it was squiding time, Squided my two best areas and got a do-nut, we fished a reef and got Trevs, Leather Jackets and cods. we then headed for a troll and managed 3 Bonito, and 2 salmon before heading for Flathead drift and managed only four in 1 & 1/2 hours so we decided to give our reef spot another go and we managed to get 7 Salmon, 4 slimies, 8 leather Jackets, 8 trevally, 1 king fish been under sized, 3 red rock cods, 3 black cods(Greek soup fish )sweep, 2 squid pike and Snapper. The fish would not leave my squid jigs alone and my rod went flying out of my rod holder and chris ended up with the catch of the day catching my rod with the salmon still on it will have to pull it apart and clean the reel, almost couple of hundred dollars down the drain. Now for the conditions to get well enough for a Browns bottom bash, Thanks for a top day out chris Edited August 8, 2011 by Groper
james7 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Interesting collection of fish you and Chris caught Groper. Shame about the weather and missing out on the deep sea trip, but at least you scored a feed. Like you said, Chris certainly scored the catch of the day saving your reel. Cheers Peter
Ray R Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 WooHooo, great session mate, good variety of fish , lucky with the rod catch too..
PRED-ATOR Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Great variety of fish fellas, How good would it be if the conditions at browns were as flat as the water in your pictures : )
Basil D Posted August 8, 2011 Author Posted August 8, 2011 (edited) The water was amazing, at Grays point that is,If only it was like that all the way to Browns Edited August 8, 2011 by Groper
Pongrass18ft Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 The water was amazing, at Grays point that is,If only it was like that all the way to Browns Top day out Basil, first time ever I've seen two squid caught at once on one rod Your squid rod will have a safety line attached from now on How big was the swell around the bommie....I thought we were surfing Cronulla beach through the heads yesterday evening. Made the boat feel like a surf board. Looking forward to the next trip. Chris.
fish53 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Nice mixed bag there. I was out off Cronulla between the Hacking and Boat Harbour and there were lots of flathead but mostly small. Were you in close or out further? I was between 10-20m. Grays Point was interesting as it seems to have silted up with more sand around the boat ramp since the last rains. On the low tide it was very shallow. Pete

Keflapod Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) Hey Basil and Chris, Well done on entrering the world boat-surfing competition. You guys must have cast-iron stomachs to put up with that sort of swell. Decent catch of fish. As far as the greeks see it, it's a calamari and salted bonny / slimey mezethes (apperetif), soup entree, fried flatty main course, salmon BBQ as the other main course, BBQ snapper as another main course, fried leatherjacket as the next main course, and sugared sweep chunks as the desert. The kingie would NEVER HAD GONE BACK (it would have been stuffed into a 1970 imitation leather sandal). So Basil, did you observe my 'Rules of engagement" when fishing with new people? Ie no farting for at least 1 hour, no rod grabbing (ever!), etc ? Or did you just slap him on the back and let'em fly like you've known eachother for years ? Tony PS - the rod-catching feat should be entered into the 'classic catches' competition...where we can watch it in slow motion and judge it (like in the cricket).... Baffler Mate that would be some king of freak trip if I did, we caught these fish on bait and the squid on the Jigs but the fish were also smashing my jig, if you ever caught a fish on a jig you will know they dont stay on long, few heads shakes and they are free as they contain no barbs, still managed to land a few fish in my time on them

That makes more sense. What were you using for bait then?
Basil D Posted August 11, 2011 Author Posted August 11, 2011 Ah! That makes more sense. What were you using for bait then? Pillies, live slimies, Bonito, the salmon were hitting the live slimies half there body size, greedy critters.I was rubbing pillies all over the jigs.
