Clarkes Point Reserve

Hi guys,

Just got back from my favourite chill out spot just because the weather looked really nice. It was low tide and just threw out a few prawns. Fairly quiet nite, pulled out a couple nice snappers that looked pretty nice. Didn't bother measuring them because i was just gonna throw them back in.

I was wondering about people's thoughts on the water quality in that area, would you take any fish home with you? I heard that pretty much anything in the Parra River is not that clean which is why i release anything i catch. I found this on a google search: http://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/consumers/keeping-food-safe/special-care-foods/sydney-harbour-seafood/#recommended-max-intake

Couldn't see snapper in that table, or does it go by another name??

Anyways, interested to hear what you think of the water quality and has it got better or worst recently.

cheers!

That table is for east of the harbour bridge. Clarkes Park is well and truely west of the bridge so either way they don't recommend eating anything west of the bridge.

As for not eating from west of the bridge i guess thats because everyone knows that fish see the bridge and know they aren't allowed to swim to the other side, I'm sure the bream and jewies in middle harbour wouldn't dream of swimming up river and the kingies i've caught at Gladesville have never been east of the harbour bridge either :P

As for being cleaner, the water looks to have cleaned up but that doesn't get rid of all of the dioxins in the sediment in places like homebush bay which are the reason for the recommendations.

The west of the Harbour Bridge rule is something I've heard often, but there are exceptions. Snapper and bream are pretty long-lived so they've seen the worst of it. However pelagic species such as kingfish tend to travel a bit and I wouldn't have any problem taking one west of the bridge (although they're mostly rats if you do find them here).

Hi Ben,

I was just wondering what you meant by aren't allowed to swim to the other side of the bridge. And thanks for the info!
