breambaron
G'Day Raiders, Looking at putting a UHF radio in my tinnie. Are they all basically the same. Not too keen on going more than 2k's out. How many channels should i look for? Are they relativley easy to install or does a marine electrician have to do it? Any advice would be great Cheers
Ian J
UHF or VHF or are you thinking of a 27mhz radio ? As for wiring there is normaly only two wires that you need to connect, power and earth wire which are normaly red and black. So if you think you can handle that you might as well give it a try. Then just plug in the aerial and your away, their is also the mounting of the radio and aerial but a Saturday afternoon with a couple of beers, should do the trick. Fisherman36
Hey mate. You use a VHF radio (or a 27Mhz) for marine not UHF. They are easy to install. Just remember for VHF you are also required by law to get a license. If you aren't going past 2km out then you may be ok with just getting a 27mhz, same process to install and no license required. martoiscool
Hey insomniac, do you mean that you need to be a licensed qualified radio installer to put one in or do you mean a boat license??? I would of thought anyone could put one in, or does it have to be certified like an oven ina house etc...

Hey mate, I meant you need a license (a VHF operator license) to use a VHF radio - different to a boat license. Anyone can install it, you just aren't meant to use it without a VHF license. That's why I said you may be better with a 27Mhz radio if you aren't going out far, you can use a 27Mhz radio without needing a special license.
