hamerz84
G'day raiders, as my title suggests I'm heading over to Wellington in October for the rugby world cup for 4 days. Now we only have tix for 1 game so I have plenty of time on my hands. I want to take a light spin outfit with me and some plastics and vibes. Just need some pointers in what I should take and where I can fish, were staying on the harbour so water isnt to far away, any advice is will be most appreciated & thanks in advance. Cheers Hamerz. Kiwi
Have a great trip. Plenty of big blue cod from shore and also reasonable snapper. Wade at low tide for Paua/abalone but check legal size. A few good charter boats run from there Pete Lamb is a well known and sucessful bloke both boat and land based. You should get onto some great Hapuka, Blue nose and maybe jig some kings in the straight. Cheers Rowan
Penguin
I used to fish Petone wharf alot as a youngster (its on the northern side of Wellington harbour). We used to catch herrings and livebait them for salmon(kahawai), kings, and barracoutas. Trevs, gurnards, flounder and cod used to also make appearances. You used to be able to fish around the shipping wharfs in Wellington back then, pilchards were caught there on jigs and used as bait for all the above species. A close mate who used to live here in Sydney, now lives at Oriental bay in Wellington, he tells me he spins up lots of kahawai there, some other guys have been livebaiting and catching kings when they are about. Good luck hope you get a few. Edited September 1, 2011 by penguin
