Nathan00734
hey raiders, tried twice for black fish in estuarys and both without luck ! im new to this so just want to ask a few questions i think im doin everythin correct. I got a stopper then a float then a swivel. then 1 metre trace with size 8 green hook ! also weighted with 00 and size 1 stoppers to get the float down till about 1 inch of the top red section is only showing ! i have found the stringy type of weed ! is this suitable? i put a loop for the hook and put the weed through the loop and wrap it around the hook different ways for each side. is this correct? and also how deep do you think the weed should be in estuaries? i seen a guy today with about 30-40 cm trace and the stopper wasnt that far up ! should i be at this depth as well? roughly what depth should i be fishing at? also how often should i be burleying and how much? i dont know if im burleyin to much or to little thanks
Guest
Ok this is how I rig up. Stopper ...smalll bead...float....small bead....swivel.....30cms mainline.....sinker,preferereably a barrel type and if its too heavy for the float shave some off with a knife...swivel....40 to 50cms flurocarbon trace 6 to 10lb and pan hook size 6 to 10 ...I like the size 8s. The weed is best put on by rolling it into a thin strip and draping the weed over the eye of the hook and wrap 3 to 4 turns up the trace and then with the other end wrap around hook 3 or 4 times and then the piece you wrapped around the top upwards now wind down around the hook in the opposite direction...make sure your bait looks good in the water before casting out. The tip of the float should be no more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch out of the water and if its higher add a small split shot. I weight my float in a big bucket before I leave and that takes the guess work out.Just put a stopper on a short piece of line and add the float and tie the sinker directly under the eye of the float and wack it in the bucket...make sure the bucket is deep enough that the flaot doesnt hit the bottom before settling. Burley often if no bites and burley a little when they are biting....NO BURLEY NO BLACKFISH The depth varies so start around 8 to 10 feet in shallower areas and if no bites keep adjust down till your float lays on top of the water and then come up a foot or so. Same for deep water keep going down until you get a bite or hit bottom or start to get snagged and then come up until your float starts to drift again. I hope that helps. Cheers Stewy

luderick -angler
Not much I can add but simplify your rig stopper rubber or knot, bead, float, some of the insualtion from inside a power cord about 1 inch long (the really thin stuff you strip it off with a knife) this acts as a shock asorber and you dont damabe the stem of the float on the ground, barrel sinker to suit, swivel, 20cms main line (to add split shot to to fine the floats ballast and get near nuetral bouyancy), swivel then 18 inch 6lb fluro trace and size 8 hook! To test for depth get a no1 ball sinker and tie some line through it hook it to your hook and set what you think is the correct depth throw in and the float will sink and hit the stopper under water! the float should be approx two feet under the surface you have the approx correct fishing depth adjust accordingly as the tide falls or makes Spots depend on tides and whe nthey will bite! Don't let folks tell you otherwise! Occasionally they will defy the rules and bite the exact opposite tide they should Send me a PM of where your fishing I probably know the spot and can give you further info on the tide to fish and depth also you can find Scrubby and myself in the harbour most Sundays so if you want to tag along let me know but you will be sworn to a code of silence! bream111
Follow Stuey's set up. I basically use the same set up. Instead of using small beads as shock absorbers I cut up small pieces of the rubber extrusion that it is used to keep window and screen doors gauze in place. I fish the river system at Port Stephens at a place called the short cut. I prefer to fish the run in tide. As the tide comes in it brings cleaner water. Remember Stuey's advice no BURLEY NO FISH. Try and hook up with another Blackfish fisherman it will fast track your skills.
