blue mountains region fly fishing advice

Hey guys,

We're up in the blue mountains this weekend and need some help. Today, my mate and I fished TCD for the second time with the same result.... zilch, nada, zero a big fat donut. After all the successful reports i see on this site regarding TCD, these results are making me a little depressed. We fished fly and lure, soft plastics, hard bodies, tassie devils, dries, wooly buggers and nymphs all for one follow. Anyway, we're planing to change our luck tomorrow morning by fishing some rivers instead, because regardless of we catch or not, there's just some thing magical about fishing a pristine river for trout with fly rod in hand. We were wondering, with all the blue mountain fly fishing knowledge we know people have on this site, what would be our best bet for a fly fish tomorrow? preferably on a stream, fly or lure, and relatively easily accessible (although a mild hike wouldn't be bad). Also, it'd be great to know the pick of the flies to use at this of year around here.

Any advice is greatly appreciated and feel free to PM me any info if necessary.

Tight Lines :1fishing1: , Luke

Luke have a look a the reports from Cadds he's doing well! You may also want to have look at the fish river easy access around Oberon. TCd is a tough place it can fire one day and not the next trust me most good flyfishers have had the dread donut there!

Cheers for your reply mate,

yeah well it's a nice place to fish from, if our objective while there was to see wildlife then today would have been a success. We saw believe it or not a dingo crossing the road on the way up to lithgow, countless kangaroos, even a wombat! we also came across alot of dead animals such as dead goats, rabbits and kangaroos on the waters edge along the eastern side of the dam which was weird. But the fishing was frustrating to say the least, we were looking at the Cox's river and it looks good, any particular info on good fishing access there?

Hi Luke, i know where your coming from. TCD can be a very frustrating place to fish, what works for me is fishing soft plastics or devils. However, you need to slow down the retrieve. I have had the most success on Gulp minnow, either in pumkin seed or rainbow and bounce these off the bottom very slowly. Try not to over play the pull up part of the retrieve, a gentle twitch up generally works for me. Its a nice place to fish, although i've noticed a few bits of rubbish and empty lure packets around there lately - not happy about that. I've heard the Coxs around Rydal is pretty good.

Good luck with it.

Hi Luke,

I just PM'd you. I was out again today and had a cracker. I'm not sure if i'll do a post this time, it must be getting boring hearing the same thing over and over again.

When fishing the rivers, you really need to be careful to stay on the banks as the fish are still in spawning mode. The fish deposit their eggs in some of the slower currents in the river rock (easy for anglers to step on). I picked up a really good buck rainbow in spawning colours with milk.

Good luck.

Regards Chris

TCD can be a heart breaker, one of the best pieces of advise I got for it was to fish it in the worst weather possible. Wind, rain, snow, sleet... seems to work! Persistence pays off up there.

Caddis, I NEVER get bored of reading your reports  Keep em coming, keeps me enthused when I can't get out.

Cheers

Windy
