CarlRak
Raiders, At last, a plan comes together! Took my third trip to the area yesterday and was reasonably confident that I’d learnt enough from my previous two outings to get myself hooked up to a couple of fish. Conditions: sunny, light variable winds (all with some east in them), first half of the rising tide. Target: Flathead. Gear: 2-4kg spin stick, 6lb braid, 10lb leader, 80mm Squidgy Wrigglers in Bloodworm, 2” Gulp Minnow Grubs and 4” Turtleback Worms in Pumpkinseed, Strike Pro blades 4.5g. Started the session in ankle deep water casting at the drop-off and before long was onto my first fish. Taken on a Squidgy Wriggler. Walked up and down the flats trying the same technique and running through a variety of plastics and the blades without much going on. Returned to my original spot and got another Wriggler rigged up. 2-3 casts later I was onto a second flatty and before too long a third. Finished the session when I was waist deep. Totals: 3 flathead hooked, 3 landed, 3 returned. All in the 30-35cm range. Had dinner with the family later in the evening and they kept asking why I had a stupid grin all over my face. Sunny day, catching fish, plan coming to fruition, families playing on the sand, watching the boats cruise by……. Carl P.S. If anyone else is a relative new-comer to fishing and using soft plastics and enjoys the above style PM me and perhaps we can organise a session together. joshot15
Its hard to argue with the squidgy wrigglers! Plastics are great fun. I love getting out to flick plastics although im usually on the hunt in the harbour. Nice catch mate. Josh
tumra
mate great work... i was fishing off the beach at monteray on saturday as well but was fishing using nippers of the surf in the hope of a few whiting. Landed a a mix back of bream, trevally and flathead instead. Caught 2 undersized flatties while moving the bait slowly over the sand so the flatties are starting to bite pretty well... When soft plastic fishing for flatties I tend to use 3 inch pre weighted paddle tails and tend to stick to the part of the beach close to the groynes. I tend to find that the flatties hang around these area. Was looking at trying for flatties on plastic this weekend though the weather doesnt look crash hot.
