Live garfish vs yakkas for jewfish

Live yakka's have got to be the most overrated bait for jewies to the point where I'd say they are like brussel sprouts to a kid. Yakkas are great fodder for chopppers and salmon but jewies find them too much of a hassle getting down as they can be spikey little buggers. In my opinion garfish are a better option for jewies. I'd rate a fresh squid or a butterflied slimey a quantum leap above both baits though these days I can't be bothered tying on anything else except for a plastic or blades when chasing jewies.

Garries hands down. I rate them much higher than Yakkas.

But being an opportunistic feeder I think they would rarely pass up a lively yellow tail, dancing around wearing an 8/0 as bling. For this reason i often use them myself, that and they are easily accessed.

But given a choice, it'd be mullet followed by a garrie.

Ive caught plenty of Jew from the Hacking and the Georges on live tailor approx 20cm in length. I think they work very well, but that just me!

Hey mate i suggest you check the legal length of tailor in NSW before you go advertising breaking the law :074: :074:

Oh yeah and check the site rules as well ---2. No posts on illegal fishing activity of any kind be it illegal methods or exceeding bag limits or undersize fish

Here's the link to legal size limits http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/regulations/sw/sw-bag-and-size

  • 2 weeks later...

Jews also hunt on the surface guys....

I have seen gars being chased by jews in 8m of water in quiet bays after big rains back of Lane Cove, have even landed one on a small plastic during a bream comp casting at the tail walking gars. Appox 10kgs

Have heard them slurping bait off the top like barra in water deeper than 10m on steep rocky banks, then there are the bridge ones at night under lights....

Gars hands down on the edge of sandflat/weed beds.
