kurtisjohnthomas Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Ok, was just looking for some ideas from you guys. Pretty much I am after a light spinning outfit for the harbour that has the ability to deal with bigger fish that come along. My Original thought was a Daiwa Freams 4000 on a Samaki Zing Medium 7' 8-15lb. But now I have got thinking on the rod and reel. Reel. Maybe a Shimano Stradic FJ 4000. Has 10kg drag or a Shimano Stradic CI4 4000... Rod, Maybe a G.Loomis. Either Bronzeback SMR822S-SP 7'4 8-12lb or a SJR 781 GL2 6-10lb 6'6. I really don't know. I was looking at spending $500 max.. I really like the Samaki's though. I don't know if I can justify spending the big bucks on the Loomis. Don't know if I will get that much more performance out of them Help would be appreciated
tentonner Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I would be very surprised if a 4000 size stradic put out 10kgs of smooth drag, I've got the ci4 which I love and is a really nice reel but doubt it could genuinely put out 10kgs of drag. The freams look to be very good value for money atm. Can't really comment on the rods as I havent used either.
mike82 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I've got the GLoomis bronze back matched to a 3000 certate custom. It is an awesome combo! The only minor criticisms i have are that the guides are a touch small (for larger leaders) and do sit very close to the blank, so if you are fishing near structure and need a leader of more than 20lb then the knot does tend to collect the guides a little bit. When fighting a king you sometimes wish the fore grip was a 'bees' longer. Tough as nails with a great action! In my opinion anyway.
Ribs Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 i have been driving myself crazy trying to decide on a new set up similar to yours to chase jews in the river and smallish kings outside...i have decided on the Rod....Nitro Magnumm Butt 5-9kg .....exe but i have the powerbream finesse 1-3kg and they are great rods......but reels....Daiwa i prefer......I still have no idea....i have gathered the below info which may assist: Daiwa Freams 4000 4+1 8kg 20lb 200m 360g $220 Daiwa Seagate 3500 7+1 6kg 20lb 300m 395g $250 Daiwa Caldia 3500 Custom 6+1 8kg 25lb 300m 350g JDM $300 Daiwa Sol 4000 similar to Caldia 365g 15lb 300m $310 Shimano c14 4000 6+1 9kg 8lb 200m 270g $260 Shimano Stadic 5000 5+1 11kg 10lb 200m 300g $220 Personally i want the lightest possible reel capable of holding a minimum of 300m of 20lb braid on one spool, 30-40lb on the other (most quality Daiwa comes with 2)..however the drag varies from 6kg to 11kg and i am now unsure what is the most important.....drag....weight....CRRB's...etc.... Hope this info helps, and any advise gents on which direction "we" should go on reels will be appreciated....cheers...Ribs..
Catchin Jack Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 All great reels but have you checked out some of the new Pflueger reels that have just come out, great line capacity and good drag, you can read up on them at Pure Fishing website.

Hi Fezza, thanks for the tip, i just checked out the Phluegers and for everyones information here is the stats for their Arbor 7450 reel which is on par with the Daiwas/Shimanos listed earlier......now to make a decision...Phlueger 7450 7+1 20lb/250m 338g $210
gmandile Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Also check out the Shimano Rarenium Ci4 4000. For pretty much the same $$$, looks like a better reel than the stradic.
