350chev Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Hi Raiders, I've recently purchased a boat and am real keen to get stuck into some of these snapper and kings that are being caught around Sydney. Could anyone shed a liitle light on bait, tackle, techniques and maybe point me in a general direction where I could begin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Raiders and and great summer of fishing to all!

10460475 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Hey mate, good luck with the new boat, perfect timing as well!! Took me a while to suss out kings in the harbour, best advice is to not give up the first is always the hardest. Hope the following helps (note this is just from my experience i am sure everyone has their own opinions): Bait: Fresh is the best live is better!! i will spend a few hours getting both yakkas and squid as sometimes i find them a bit picky Small green hooks for yakkas and small squidjigs for squid try all different colours, i will usually try a few jigs each spot Rigs: I like to bridle my yakkas through the eyes, using a needle. Squid is double hooked whole, there are heaps of how to's on the internet. Both are slow trolled as i like to cover alot of ground Or strips of fresh squid if your anchoring work will just be sure to check its not spinning before you send it down otherwise you wont get a touch. try the mornings with the high tides but the best kingy i caught was in the middle of the day, just as we slowed down to reel the lines in to call it quits, she went 22 kg's gutted, just goes to show theres always a chance, no matter how wrong the time of day was!! Hope this helps mate Dave

Thanks Raiders and and great summer of fishing to all! If your after snapper and kings head out to long reef more or less anywhere from a few hundred metre off the headland (watch out for shallow reefs in close and waves)up to a few K out watch your sounder and look for changes in depth and bait fish. Get lives on the way out I was getting live bait from Balmoral but it has not been so good of late so have been getting it at north head (as it's on the way) (don't have a mark.. just do it by sight) think any area just inside the head is good berley hard and they (yakka) will find you first one i get i normal throw straight back in as a live bait, how i present it depends on the day. If your staying inside the heads go to the wedding cake marker off watsons bay for bait it's worth wetting a livie there as well. Might be a good idea to tell people what kind of boat you have so they give you suitable suggestions... no-one wants to send you to 12mile in a 12ft tinnie with a 20 on the back ! best of luck

The biggest king ive landed was about 11kg jigging at the peak on a mates boat. Its a relief to know that theres fish of that size in the harbour, dont know if id be keen enough to go to far offshore in my 15 ft half cabin, maybe if the seas are flat. Thanks again Daniel
