thanh22 Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Does anyone one know of any good kayak launching points preferably from the north side of the Hacking (Burraneer or Gunnamatta Bay) that would allow me to paddle across to Mainbar? Rutherford reserve would be ideal but it looks abit too rocky. Darook park at the opening of Gunnamatta bay looks feasible. On google maps there seems to be gate into the park but having never been there myself I'm not sure if you can park a car inside. Could any locals shed some light onto this?
onearmedfisho Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Mate there are gates there but you can park at the gates and walk down to Darook park with your kayak. Alternatively you could drive to Wallys wharf right at the end of Port Hacking Rd South and launch at the boat ramp which is a shorter paddle to mainbar than from Gunamatta bay?
zephi Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Launch at Wally's Wharf (Dolan's bay) or Water Street Wharf (Buranner Bay) and paddle straight south. I always paddle down that way with ease. From Wally's (closest) takes me under 10 mins. Darook Park is okay to launch but getting the kayak from car park to launch area is a trek. Don't even attempt to launch at Salmon Haul Bay. It's really difficult to get thru the trees and stairs. That's the fisheries center and they don't allow public access within that area. If you want to fish bundeena/Simpsons bay, best to launch from Lugarno Avenue boatramp which is in Gunamatta Bay. This is a lot easier than beach launching from the Gunamatta Baths side.
thanh22 Posted November 5, 2011 Author Posted November 5, 2011 Cool thanks guys both suggestions look perfect. Will have to hit it up soon. Hows the parking around those two wharfs? I suppose it would be okay if i launch at 6-7am.
zephi Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 You have a good chance during weekdays. Definitely not on weekend and school holidays. Try get there at 5-6am. On weekends. That applies to all wharves. Wallys wharf you can find parking but its up to a 4 min trek up hills, wouldn't trust leaving kayak unattended with gear there for more than a minute.
darrenu Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I use Wally's at Dolans Bay and regularly leave my gear there unattended to get the car. Never been a problem, I suppose someone could nick it but pretty hard to get away without me seeing your number plate! Easily the best jump off point for Miainbar.
