elite Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Hey raiders went out sunday morning up and down south botany heads managed 6 kings from 70cm+...all caught on live yakkas biggest went around the 80cm'ish mark... not one rat...if this is what to go by, I CAN WAIT FOR SUMMER Cheers!!
andrew399 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Nice fish mate! Dory - A single hook is fine in many situations, however, I like to run with a treble stinger hook. When slow trolling squid I pin it in the bottom of the hood, when trolling yakkas or gar I either have the stinger loose just trailing behind the tail or I pin it in the bottom of the tail. I find you get alot better hook ups and get more fish when they are tentative. Your 20lb braid may be a little light but persevere with it until you start getting blown away too often. I just use a uni knot as it is easy to tie in heavy lines but there is nothing wrong with a snell if your confident with it.
erroll Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Great work there buddy, you must be stoked. As much as I love taking the family out on a the boat for the day, if it is getting in the way of a good fishing session, I still struggle. Just have to wait till the kids are bigger so they can comfortably go offshore. Can't wait to break my drought. Cheers Erroll
HighSpeedSpin Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Nice one mate! im trying to get my fist king as well, would you mind telling me what outfit you used and the rig? cheers it means alot ive benn basically making my own rig of 20lb braid- 50lb mono using double uni knot then a snelled 7/oh hook with 3cm of tag ,all on a 6-8kg 7foot graphite rod and a 5000 size reel - is this ok ? Cheers DoryTheFish Are you fishing of a boat or rocks? makes a huge difference in tackle. If you are fishing of the rocks i would say 30lb-50lb if you are going to use braid as you need to stop the kings in their tracks otherwise they will blow you away, 5000 reel might be a bit small for the job but then again it depends what brand and range of the reel you are talking about Rod should match the line class and 7ft as a minimum but that again depends on the spot you are fishing. Some spots you'll be wishing for a longer rod just for clearance when the fish plays up at your feet i can't really coment on boat setups as i do not fish from a boat but i think in general should be similar, probably shorter rods used Good luck and keep us posted how you go HSS
vo2c88 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Nice Work. Yet to target these bad boys this year.Just wondering where you using a downrigger? Keep up the good work. Regards Vic

Cheers DoryTheFish sorry raiders - broke my kingy drought for this "season" ...oops.... agree with highspin....depends on land or boat..and many other things e.g. also depends on quality of gear and definitely depends on the size of the kingy - sometimes you just cant stop the bus!!! My gear: 14,000 shimano sargossa (drag set at 5kgs approx - this is a bit light - should've been around 10kg i reckon), 10kg uglystick one piece, 65lb TUF braid, 80lb black magic leader Rig: size 6 hook, back of yakka head
hornets Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Excellent Report . Great to see some action around the heads again. Did you DR the yakkas . I will be out this weekend. Were the yakkas back in force yet in the usual places . Thanks .

Thanks . no. just used a heavy sinker, drifted with sea anchor (too many selfish fishos on the boat to DR haha) Yakkas were a little slow going - too many sweep hanging around at the beginning, then the yakka numbers came. conditions looks great for this weekend - chance of rain though..
