Bull Sharks!

Hi raiders,
I might be buying a specialised fishing kayak. Probably the Hobie pro angler. I will mainly be using it in middle harbour around the roseville bridge area. I have seen a few bull sharks in these waters and i'm a little concerned. Is it safe fishing up past the bridge on a kayak with them around? Just curious as i read that there was a shark attack past the bridge years ago. The person was killed and they came to the conclusion that the shark was 3m long based on the bite size. Any comments would be great!

I seen a Bull shark while I was fishing in my Hobie Outback, scared the hell out of me but I don't even think the shark even noticed me.

The PA is a bigger yak that will feel safer IMO. If you're concerned, buy a shark shield. I was speaking with Fishraider member Joco the other day about Shark Shields, as he has one for spearfishing, he said he has had a shark come up to him - turn the shark shield on - and the shark took off in a hurry.

Middle harbour is a sharky system though, you wouldn't catch me there without a shark shield... especially in summer.

yeh, thanks for the tip mate! How exactly does the shark shield work? Does it send out some sort of electrical signal that deters the shark?

I'd be more worried about boats and jetski's running you over than sharks. I wouldn't believe every thing you hear about shark attacks, the last fatal shark attack in Sydney happened in 1963 @ Sugarloaf bay. I've only had one encounter with a shark near cabarita. It was only a little one around 4 to 5 foot and i spooked it while it was chasing some mullet on the surface.

I saw a tracking map of Bull sharks in sydney harbour on Australia day (might have been on F R) anyway they were hugely active on the day but then consider the amount on people swimming in the harbour on the day for those of you can remember it was hot as ( I remember because I was wide of sydney chasing marlin... 4 hooked, 3 thrown and one bust off)if there was a threat there would have been attacks all over the place... not to say it can't happen (ie navy diver) but you have to be pretty unlucky.... just go easy on the berley!!

Yeh, i am aware that the chances of an encounter with an animal big enough to knock you out of the yak are very slim however, anything is possible these days. I have seen sharks in upper middle harbour before which is where i will be doing my fishing. I guess you can't shy away from life because there is a small chance of something going wrong.

I've seen bull sharks in the upper reaches bass fishing.

Sharks are everywhere, you just have to learn to deal with them. The way I see it, is if you're scared of everything, you'll never achieve anything.

If it's that much of a concern, I'd recommend the shark sheild. I use one when snorkelling with my daughter and wouldn't go out without one. I can tow it behind the kayak, but don't for where I go. If I were to go ocean, I probably would.
