New Raider - Question on Outboard sizes?

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and looking at purchasing my first boat.

I have been looking around for a while now but haven't found the right boat yet.

I am looking at a Stacer/Quintrex 475 BayMaster/BayHunter or possibly a Freedom Sport/Easy Rider (price dependant).

My question is will a 60hp be enough power to get this boat on plane with 3 or 4 people on board? (I know the power needed for fibreglass, but not familiar with aluminium)

Thank you for your help.

Hi Charlie, that would be min HP for the boats you list and if you are talking 4 adults I would not like to only have a 60HP on the back if my boat-nothing worse than being underpowered and the outboard having to work extra hard to push the hull thru the water. My advise would be to find a boat you like, fits within budget and then water test becuase all 60HPs are not created equally-some are more powerful than others. Also some hulls can have "hooks" in them that cause the boat to stick to the water. I have lost count of the number of same model hulls I have run and one boat trims nicely and as designed while another exact same boat will be boggy and only way to know for sure is to water test.

Cheers,

Huey.

I have a Quintrex 475 Bayhunter Caprice with a 70hp Yamaha 2-stroke outboard. When we have 4 aboard it gets onto the plane effortlessly and performs well. With 2 up it flies along. Only ever seem to use 3000 to 4000rpm when cruising for around 20knots. I think that 60hp would just be a little less than desirable for me. The extra power is also useful when crossing a bar and you have to time the placing of your boat. As Huey said, the test is to take a test drive.

x 2 for what's already been said. I have a 475 Bay hunter Caprice with yammie 70 2 stroke and millenium hull. I never had 4 adults in it (had 2 adults and four kids) and I'm more than happy with the power. Infact I'm more than happy with the whole boat. Great boat, and so far great motor.

Thank you all and thank you once again Huey.

I will keep looking for the right boat then, and need to make a trip up to see Huey when I have some free time.
