niclebum
Hi Raiders, reading all these posts on people catching Bonito, Tailor, Salmon and Kingies whilst trolling recently, I'm wanting to try this technique of fishing out! For starters, what are some cheap, versatile trolling lures that aren't too big because I don't have the most trustworthy gear for a big fish. Im just wanting cheapish ones as I'm not going to target fish through this technique, just a lure that'll run behind the boat on the way to where we're fishing. Also how far do you need the lure behind the boat. I suspect it varies depending on the design of the lure. And has anyone ever got a catch through trolling in the parramatta river??? Thanks Parraman
james7
Get a few pink squid skirts (8-12cm). They're cheap and they'll catch just about anything - bonito, tailor, salmon and even kings love them. I put a small bean sinker inside the head and usually use a double hook, although singles and trebles are okay too. Depending on conditions, troll them about 20-30m behind the boat. Speed, anywhere between 6-16kph. I like trolling them just under the surface. Hope this helps. Cheers Peter

james7
Thanks a heap i think i might go the 8cm ones..what catches have you got on themNick G'day Nick If you look at any of my reports from the last couple of years, just about everything we've caught trolling has been on those pink skirts. If fact, earlier this year, the kingy I caught which was the "Catch of the Month" was on one of them. About two months ago I caught a pb bonito (about 80cm) as well. The tailor absolutely love them too. A few years ago we even caught a heap of striped tuna just off Cronulla using them. I hardly use hardbodies anymore. aeb870
Not sure about your local tackle stores, but I live in Shellharbour and our local tackle stores stock these. I usually buy the smaller size for fishing Bonito off the rocks. Maybe not $20 but they are easily around the $15 mark from memory.

macman
The skirted squid are good as mentioned, but if you are after a cheap hardbody then do yourself a favour and buy a few of the Trollcraft red and white minnows, I have found them to be an excellent trolling lure, especially if used on beefed up bream spinning gear or a bit heavier. I like the Pelagics in size #4 , you will pay between 6 and 8 bucks each for these. Especially good for sambos, tailor and bonito, with the occasional king. I think the kings prefer a trolled skirt or sluggo though. Matt
