bobakers
Hi guys Hoping someone can point me in the right direction as I am now losing my mind with my '81 Evinrude 150hp (150TRL CSF). Took it out a couple of months ago started ok but ran like a dog, no power. Went back home and found RH bank not firing. Swapped over power packs & fault transferred so put in a new power pack on RH bank (also repaced the 3 coils on the rh bank). Engine now starts ok but as soon as I take it above idle either using the throttle lever or putting it into gear the RH bank cuts out. (Idle in gear still have spark). The only other thing that I have replaced on this engine (beside plugs and water pumps)is the trigger base and HT leads about 18 mths ago and the motor was running fine for the 12 mths after that. What am I missing??? Thanks Bob

a boat
Hi, you have a 1980 model engine going by that model number and could be many things from a simple earth problem thru to a faulty component in the ignition system. If you do not have a DVA meter than you are fighting a losing battle and parts swapping is an expensive way to try and fix a spark problem. Was it a genuine or aftermarket power pack and coils? Cheers, Huey. Edited December 21, 2011 by Huey @ Huett Marine
bobakers
Hi Guys Heuy your right it is a 1980. The coils and powerpack are sierra. Well I took a breath and had another look. Removed the kill wire from the new powerpack and bingo spark on both banks. Seams that the left powerpack (the one I was geting spark on) was causing the other powerpack to shut down. Put the right powerpack back on along with the new powerpack and alls good. Took it up to windsor for a run and it started and ran ok but after about 20 minutes at full throttle (38knots) the over temp alarm came on (first time since Ive had the Baron that Ive ever heard it) idled back and checked telltale which was good and after a couple of minutes alarm went off. Headed back to ramp at 4000rpm and no alarm. Cant remember running it at WOT for that long so might not even be related. thanks Bob
a boat
Hi Bob, good to hear you got to the bottom of it and we have seen strange things with aftermerket parts and that is why I asked. Good idea to give the ignition system a once over on such an age engine paying particular attention to the groundings. As for the overheat, I would not ignore it and if the horn is coming on there is a good reason for that and that is to tell you damage is close by and could of already happened and it would be a same to kill an old engine for a simple thing like overheat. First place to look would be a new water pump, easy to do and I bet the head gaskets, water cover jacket gasket, deflectors, thermos and pressure valve are probably original and if so these are all preventative maintenance items that want to be done to give that girl another 30 years of running. If you do all the above yourself the parts are no at all dear and worth doing, Cheers, Huey.
